A Swiss criminal court sentenced 4 members of the billionaire Hinduja family. Hinduja family members were sentenced to jail for exploiting vulnerable domestic workers. The Swiss criminal court dismissed the more severe charges of human trafficking. Spotlight on the abuse by Indian-born tycoon Hinduja and his wife, son & daughter-in-law. They seized passports of workers, mostly illiterate Indians, working at their Geneva villa. The Hindujas also paid the workers in Indian rupees – not Swiss francs. The money was paid in banks at home, which the workers could not access. The 4 weren’t in court in Geneva, but a fifth defendant, Najib Ziazi, was in attendance. Najib Ziazi, the family’s business manager, received an 18-month suspended sentence. Lawyers representing the defendants said they would appeal the criminal court order. Court said the 4 were guilty of exploiting workers & providing unauthorised employment. The wages paid were less than one-tenth the pay for such jobs in Switzerland. The 4 Hindujas also barred the domestic workers from leaving the villa. The Hinduja family members forced the workers to serve excruciatingly long hours. Prakash Hinduja and his wife Kamal received a four-and-a-half-year sentence. Their son Ajay and his wife, Namrata, were sentenced each to four years. Pertinent to note, the family set up residence in Switzerland in the late 1980s. Prakash Hinduja was already convicted in 2007 on similar, if lesser charges. Prosecutors say he persisted in employing people without proper paperwork anyway. Swiss officials have already seized diamonds, rubies, a platinum necklace & other assets. Prosecutors said that at times the staffers were forced to work up to 18 hours a day. An employee got stuck with a hospital bill of $7,000+ & Hindujas only agreed to pay half. Employees worked even later hours for receptions and slept in the basement of the villa.
