The Birth of a Nation is a groundbreaking film by DW Griffith that came out in 1915. New research by Desmond Ang suggests it may have a caused a century of racism.

    Absolute nonsense. Nothing racist. History must be viewed in the context of the time in which the event(s) took place. NO PEOPLE owe another ppl integration rights. Never happened in human history prior to 1964. Black was a free ppl…free to build their own cities/ towns, their own homes, theirown political system, employ their own ppl …in every way they were a free ppl. Or, if the felt they were a persecuted ppl, they could hv carve out a place for themselves in the vast unsettled lands in America. They were not. They chose forced integration (1964) on their own volition.

    In 1930 THE BIRTH OF A NATION was considered to have been the greatest motion picture ever made. The movie was rereleased in 1930.

    i dont think it caused racism in of itself but it was part a larger beliefs inspired by eugenics and scientific racism which took hold during the 1920s and later influenced the race relations in nazi germany

    The reason why so many people hate this movie is because it accurately depicts this country's sensibilities during the Civil War era. Rather than 'glorifying' racism, Griffith was simply relating the way most Southerners felt at the time. I very much doubt Griffith was purposely glorifying anything other than the art of cinema.

    I think the film inflamed the racism that was already there, especially in the South. You had Jim Crow segregation, eugenics and capital punishment for Blacks who raped white women in disproportionate numbers. The legitimacy given to the KKK in BOAN simply exacerbated all those structural effects which were already there. Let's not forget the Great Migration of Blacks from the South to the north for better opportunities.

    After all the damage the KKK has caused, I'm amazed that it hasn't been banned and that it's still in existence today.

    This is such nonsense 😂😂😂 i even read some guy's BS comment, thanks to this video, were he imagined this film caused the destruction of entire towns. 😂😂😂 its just not true. Its a shitty movie, but it was only popular with a relatively small number of people. Most people didnt even know what it was about, not everyone agreed with the implications. And the lynching was already increasing, this film picked up the spirit of existing racist sentiment in the South and, like a true grifter, DG capitalized on it.
