MP Andrew Bridgen has been ordered to pay former health secretary Matt Hancock over £40,000 in legal fees in their ongoing libel battle. Bridgen is seeking to clear his name after being accused of antisemitism in a social media post by Hancock following a comment Bridgen made about Covid-19 vaccines. A judge recently ruled that certain parts of Bridgen’s case should be struck out, but did not dismiss the entire claim, giving Bridgen the opportunity to amend and address deficiencies in his case.
The libel claim stems from a tweet by Hancock in January 2023, in which he referred to comments made by Bridgen as “disgusting and dangerous antisemitic, anti-vax, anti-scientific conspiracy theories”. Bridgen believes the tweet was directed at him, was defamatory, and intended to cause harm to his reputation. Hancock’s lawyers argued that the claim against him should be thrown out due to lack of a realistic prospect of success and a lack of a properly articulated case. The judge did not dismiss the whole claim, giving Bridgen a chance to make amendments and address deficiencies.
After a preliminary hearing in the case, Bridgen was ordered to pay legal fees to Hancock in a court order issued on Thursday. The judge stated that although certain parts of Bridgen’s case were struck out, the libel claim was not entirely dismissed. If Bridgen does not provide amended details of his claim or successfully make the required application, the libel claim will be thrown out entirely. Hancock expressed relief at the court’s decision, stating that Bridgen should stop wasting the court’s time and drop the case.
The legal battle between Bridgen and Hancock revolves around a tweet by Hancock in response to comments made by Bridgen about Covid-19 vaccines. Bridgen shared a link to an article discussing data about deaths and adverse reactions linked to Covid vaccines, and made a comparison to the Holocaust. Hancock’s response on Twitter was seen as accusing Bridgen of promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories, which Bridgen vehemently denies. The judge’s ruling allows Bridgen the opportunity to address deficiencies in his case and make amendments as needed.

I think Bridgen shouldve just apologized instead of paying up. What a waste!
Apologizing doesnt fix the damage done. Paying up shows accountability. Its not a waste; its taking responsibility. Actions speak louder than words.
Why should Bridgen pay? Hancocks reputation was damaged, he deserves compensation.
Bridgen should pay because he breached confidentiality. Hancocks reputation may have been damaged, but that doesnt justify violating someones privacy. Compensation should go to those who suffer harm, not those who break the rules.
Why should taxpayers foot the bill for politicians squabbles? Thoughts?
Is Hancock really the victim here? Bridgen got screwed over big time.
Are we watching the same show? Hancock betrayed his wife and family, not to mention breaking the rules he himself set. Bridgen may not be perfect, but lets not paint Hancock as the victim here. He got what he deserved.
Why should Bridgen pay Hancocks legal fees? Seems unfair and excessive.
Why should Bridgen pay for Hancocks legal fees? Seems unfair to me.
I think Bridgen shouldve fought the claim, not just pay up.
I think Bridgen got what he deserved. Hancock deserved that win.
I respectfully disagree. Bridgen put up a strong fight and showed real determination. Hancock may have won, but lets not discount Bridgens efforts. It was a tough match, and both players deserve credit for their skills on the field.
Why should taxpayers foot the bill for this drama between politicians? 🤔
Because ultimately, we elect these politicians to represent us and make decisions on our behalf. If their drama impacts our society and economy, its our responsibility as taxpayers to hold them accountable. Its not just their problem, its ours too.
Should politicians be held accountable for their public statements?
Absolutely! Politicians should be held accountable for every word they say in public. They are elected to represent the people, not to manipulate or deceive them. If they cant stand by their statements, they have no business being in office. Time to clean house!
Do you think this legal battle was worth the cost for either party?
Absolutely not. The time, money, and energy wasted on this legal battle could have been better spent elsewhere. Both parties should have found a more practical and cost-effective solution. Its a shame how easily people lose sight of what truly matters.
Can you believe the legal fees in that libel claim? Outrageous or justified?
Legal fees are the price you pay for justice. If you cant handle the heat, stay out of the courtroom. Dont cry about the cost when youre the one in the wrong. Justified all the way.
Wow, Bridgen owing Hancock 40k? Drama! Whos side are you on?
Should Bridgen really have to pay all those legal fees? Seems excessive.

Why should Bridgen pay Hancocks legal fees? Seems unfair, what do you think?
What a messy situation! Is there more to this story were missing?
Theres always more to the story, but sometimes its best to mind our own business and let things unfold naturally. Nosiness can lead to unnecessary drama. Lets just enjoy the show from a distance and save our energy for our own lives.
Do you think Bridgen got what he deserved or was it too harsh?
He got exactly what he deserved. No sympathy for those who prioritize personal gain over the greater good. Harsh? Maybe. Justified? Absolutely. Actions have consequences, plain and simple.
Wow, cant believe Bridgen has to cough up 40k to Hancock! Justice served?
