The U.S. Attorney’s Office has announced that after a three-year legal process, 30-year-old Xiaoqin Yan, a Chinese national, has been sentenced to 102 months in prison for setting a Montgomery church on fire in 2021 and illegally possessing a firearm. Yan entered the church on Sept. 30, 2021, starting multiple fires inside the building. The Montgomery Fire Department was able to extinguish the fires, but the church sustained damage. Evidence presented during the trial showed that Yan had prior encounters with church staff and exhibited “odd behavior.”
During Yan’s arrest, law enforcement agents found items identical to those seen on the church’s surveillance video, including the clothes she wore during the arson and a handgun. It was also discovered that Yan had overstayed her non-immigrant visa at the time of the incident and therefore could not legally own a firearm. The investigation into Yan’s case involved multiple agencies, including the Montgomery Fire/Rescue Bureau of Investigations, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Task Force, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorneys B. Chelsea Phillips and Brandon W. Bates prosecuted Yan’s case.
In other news, Pete Laven has been introduced as the general manager of the Atlanta Braves’ Double-A club, which is set to play near the Alabama-Georgia line in 2025. This announcement comes as the team prepares for new developments and expansions in the coming years. Laven will play a crucial role in overseeing the operations and management of the team as they transition to their new location near the state border.
The sentencing of Xiaoqin Yan for setting a church on fire and possessing an illegal firearm highlights the importance of accountability and justice in cases of arson and firearm violations. The U.S. Attorney’s Office worked diligently over three years to bring Yan to justice and ensure that she faced the consequences of her actions. This case serves as a reminder of the serious repercussions of criminal behavior and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting such crimes.
Overall, the sentencing of Xiaoqin Yan serves as a cautionary tale and reminder of the legal consequences of criminal actions, particularly when they involve arson and firearm violations. The dedication of law enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting such cases underscores their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice for victims. As Pete Laven takes on the role of general manager for the Atlanta Braves’ Double-A club, the team looks towards a future of growth and expansion, further emphasizing the importance of leadership and management in sports organizations.

I think the arsonist got off too easy. They shouldve gotten a longer sentence.
Do you think 8 years is enough for burning a church? Seems lenient to me.
Shouldnt arsonists get harsher sentences? 8 years seems too short for destroying a church.
I think 8 years is too lenient for burning down a church. Justice system failed.
I think 8 years is too harsh for setting a fire. Maybe 4 years max.
Are you serious? Setting a fire is a serious crime that can endanger lives and cause significant damage. 8 years is not too harsh for such a dangerous act. People need to be held accountable for their actions. Safety should always come first.
That sentence is too lenient! Arsonists should face harsher punishments for destroying property.
Arson is a serious crime with devastating consequences. Harsher punishments may act as a deterrent, protecting communities from further harm. Its time to prioritize the safety and well-being of innocent people over the leniency shown to criminals.
I think the arsonist should receive a longer sentence, 8 years is too lenient.
I disagree. 8 years is already a significant punishment for arson. The goal should be rehabilitation, not just punishment. Extending the sentence further may not necessarily lead to better outcomes. Lets consider the bigger picture here.
I think 8 years is too light for burning down a church. Justice? 🤔
Maybe 8 years is a start, but it feels like a slap on the wrist for such a heinous act. We need harsher punishments to deter crimes like these. Justice should be swift and severe for those who destroy places of worship.
I think the arsonist should have received a harsher sentence for destroying a community hub.
I disagree. The arsonist deserved the punishment they received. Destroying a community hub is a serious crime, but we must trust the legal system to determine the appropriate sentence. Lets focus on rebuilding and supporting the affected community instead of dwelling on harsher punishments.
I think arsonists should be sentenced to community service rather than prison time.
Are you serious? Arsonists endanger lives and destroy property. Community service is not a sufficient consequence for such a serious crime. Prison time is necessary to ensure justice and protect the community. Your suggestion is dangerously lenient.
Is an 8-year prison sentence enough for endangering lives with arson?
Is 8 years enough for burning a church? Seems too lenient to me.
Should the sentence be harsher for arsonists targeting places of worship?
Is 8 years enough for burning a church? Shouldnt it be longer? Thoughts?
Why only 8 years for destroying a communitys sacred space? Seems light.
I think the sentence should have been longer, 8 years seems too short.
Its easy to say that from the sidelines. Justice was served, end of story. Stop playing armchair judge and jury. The sentence was appropriate. Move on.
Is 8 years enough for burning a church? Seems too lenient to me 🤔
Do you think the 8-year prison sentence is enough for the church arsonist?
Yes, 8 years is a slap on the wrist for such a heinous crime. The arsonist destroyed a place of worship, impacting an entire community. Justice should be harsher to deter future acts of violence. This sentence sends the wrong message about the severity of the crime.
I cant believe the sentence is only 8 years! Shouldve been longer.
Wow, 8 years for arson? Seems harsh, but justice served I guess.
I disagree, arson is a serious crime with potentially deadly consequences. Eight years seems fair considering the danger posed to lives and property. Justice should prioritize protecting innocent people from harm.
