A St George resident, Ronnie Smith, has been charged with attempted non-capital murder and several other offenses following an incident last month in St George’s Market Square, Grenada. Smith, a 24-year-old vendor from Cafébeau Hill, St George, was also facing charges for possession of a firearm and ammunition, unlawfully discharging a firearm, and damage to property.
Smith was taken to court for his trial at the St George’s Magistrate Court where he was informed of his charges. The court heard how the accused allegedly attempted a serious crime in the busy market square of the city, endangering the public and causing property damage.
Following his hearing, Smith was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison as a cautionary measure ahead of his trial. The court concluded that given the nature of the charges, he should remain in custody until all the legal proceedings have been undertaken.
The court has set Smith’s next appearance for April. The date has been set a few months down the line to allow the prosecution and defense adequate time to prepare their arguments and evidence for the case.
The charges brought against Smith by the prosecution are serious offences that carry heavy penalties, including prison time. The possession and discharge of a firearm unlawfully signifies potential danger to the public life, and attempted non-capital murder is considered a severe crime. The case continues to unfold as the island community awaits his upcoming trial.
