Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and Speaker Don Scott announced crime reduction statistics within Operation Ceasefire cities during a press conference in Norfolk. Operation Ceasefire, launched in late 2022, focuses on tackling gun violence through rigorous prosecution and community prevention in cities like Richmond, Petersburg, Norfolk, and others. The program has led to 155 cases prosecuted, 106 convictions, and 41 pending trials.
After just a year of implementation, 12 out of the 13 Ceasefire Cities have seen reductions in crime. Nine cities reported a decrease in violent crime, with a total of 225 fewer crimes in 2023 compared to 2022. Hopewell had the largest drop in violent crime at 33%, while Norfolk saw a 26% decrease in violent crime and a 31% decrease in murders. Petersburg, Portsmouth, and Richmond also reported reductions in violent crime, ranging from 7% to 17%.
Attorney General Miyares praised the three-pronged approach of Operation Ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of prevention, intervention, and prosecution. He highlighted the need for collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities, as well as the investment in community programs to steer young men away from crime. Miyares mentioned working with community-based programs like Ketchmore Kids in Newport News and Big Homies in Portsmouth.
Speaker Don Scott announced that $22 million will fund the next two years of the initiative, including a witness protection program. He noted the role of social media in crime, stating that many criminal activities are initiated or glorified on platforms like Facebook or Twitter. Miyares, however, mentioned the potential of technology in advancing their agenda, pointing to instances where gang activity is uploaded to YouTube as a way to target offenders and deter future crimes.
Overall, Operation Ceasefire has shown positive results in reducing crime rates in Virginia’s highest crime cities. By targeting gun violence through a combination of prosecution, prevention, and intervention, the program has led to significant reductions in violent crime in numerous cities. The collaboration between different levels of government and community-based organizations is seen as crucial in addressing the root causes of crime and steering individuals away from gang involvement. The continued funding and support for Operation Ceasefire will be essential in sustaining these positive outcomes in the fight against crime in Virginia.
