B.C. Driver Under the Influence Hits Sign Warning Against Drunk Driving: Police Report

RCMP in Vancouver Island recently arrested an impaired driver who smashed a truck into an anti-drunk driving sign. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. late last week. A witness reported to local police that an F350 pickup truck was speeding before it mounted the sidewalk and hit the sign, which read “Report Impaired Drivers.” By the time the RCMP arrived on the scene, the driver had already fled towards Victoria.

Despite the driver’s escape, the RCMP was able to recover debris from the crash site. Among the wreckage was the smashed anti-drunk driving sign and the driver’s license plate. With this evidence, the police were able to identity the driver. Victoria police eventually intercepted the truck on Craigflower Road at Catherine Street in Victoria.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the collision. The driver, after being arrested by the Victoria police, was handed a driving suspension lasting 90 days. Additionally, their vehicle was towed from the scene of the interception. The driver now faces serious charges for impaired driving and evading the police.

Interestingly, this incident occurred just one day after a severe collision in downtown Victoria that is also being investigated for potential impaired driving. In that case, a car was reportedly speeding before it ran a red light and T-boned a pickup truck. This accident resulted in potentially life-altering injuries for the driver of the pickup truck.

In both instances, impaired driving is suspected. These cases highlight the ongoing issues surrounding drunk driving and further emphasize the importance of strict law enforcement and public education efforts.
