A 12-year-old boy from Birmingham was shot while playing with friends outside his apartment on a Friday afternoon. Responding at approximately 3:15 p.m., local police and Birmingham firefighters came to the distressed scene at a small apartment complex located on Carson Road.
Upon their arrival, they found the young victim inside one of the apartments lying on the floor. Through radio communications, Police were able to confirm that the boy had been shot in the back. The boy was eventually found and extracted from the scene of the incident by the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
He was quickly transported to Children’s of Alabama, a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. Despite being responsive while leaving the scene of the incident, authorities reported that the victim was in a critical condition. The extent of the damage from his gunshot wound and his overall prognosis remains uncertain.
According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, the boy was playing outside in the grassy courtyard area of his home when he and his friends were allegedly approached by a group of unidentified males. One of these individuals abruptly began firing a gun, leading to the victim getting shot in the back as he tried to run and escape the sudden gunfire.
At this point in time, the suspects are believed to be either juveniles or in their late teens. Authorities have exhorted anyone with useful information related to this incident to step forward and contact investigators at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
