Chennai Super Kings successfully initiated their Indian Premier League title defense with a six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Virat Kohli’s much-anticipated return match. Kohli, who had been absent from the game for roughly two months due to the birth of his second child, had a quiet performance of 21 runs off 20 balls contributing to Bengaluru’s below-average score of 173-6. Despite the effort, Chennai sailed to 176-4, achieving their eighth consecutive win against Bengaluru.
Bengaluru’s hopes were momentarily revived by the performance of Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik, who managed a sixth-wicket stand of 95 off 57 balls when the top order crumbled. Captain Faf du Plessis, who opted to bat, gave Bengaluru a strong start with eight boundary hits in his 35-run performance, however, he fell to the fast bowling of Mustafizur Rahman who secured four wickets in this match.
Rahman effectively disrupted Bengaluru’s batting order, taking out du Plessis and Rajat Patidar during his singular power play over. He also managed to claim two more wickets, one of which was Kohli, in the middle of the innings. A brilliant catch by Ajinkya Rahane on the boundary line removed Kohli from the game, resulting in a sluggish 78-5 for Bengaluru and boosting Rahman’s stats to 4-7 off his first two overs.
Chennai’s chase was carried out swiftly with the top order securing ample runs. League newbie, Rachin Ravindra, quickly earned his place, making 37 runs off 15 balls including three sixes and three boundaries. Ajinkya Rahane, Daryl Mitchell, Shivam Dube, and Ravindra Jadeja all played a part in keeping up the run rate ensuring Chennai’s win.
The opening game illustrates the strength of Chennai’s team with their successful title defense off to a strong start. Despite Virat Kohli’s comeback, Royal Challengers Bengaluru struggled to fight off the Chennai Super Kings. The nine-week-long league promises to deliver many more exciting games with teams vying for the coveted title.
