Former West Indies cricket superstar Chris Gayle has been announced as the cricket ambassador for the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup, scheduled for June in Florida. Lauderhill Commissioner Denise Grant expressed excitement about Broward County being chosen as a host city and working with Gayle, who brings star power to promote the tournament. Grant, of Jamaican descent, is particularly thrilled to have Gayle as the ambassador for the tournament, having met him through his publicist Sean ‘Contractor’ Edwards.
Grant highlighted the positive impact of hosting the T20 World Cup in Lauderhill, stating that it will be a game-changer for the city and will showcase Lauderhill as a vibrant destination. Gayle, known as the Universe Boss, expressed his enthusiasm for helping cricket to crack the USA market by being an ambassador for the tournament. He mentioned the expected sold-out matches and the recent launch of the trophy tour at the Empire State Building in New York, thanking the ICC for selecting him and recognizing his team in Jamaica.
ICC T20 World Cup matches will be played at the Broward County on various dates in June, with a total of three venues in the USA and six in the Caribbean being used for the tournament. The event will feature 20 teams, with 10 playing their first matches in the USA and 16 contests being scheduled in Lauderhill, Dallas, and New York. The tournament will commence on June 1, with co-hosts USA taking on neighbours Canada, and the final is set to be played in Barbados on June 29.
The tournament is divided into four groups consisting of five teams each, with the top two sides from each group progressing to the Super Eight phase ahead of the knockout semi-finals and final. Group A includes co-hosts USA, India, Pakistan, Canada, and Ireland, while Group B features England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, and Oman. The West Indies are placed in Group C with New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea, while South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Nepal make up Group D.
Gayle’s participation as the ambassador for the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup in Florida adds excitement to the upcoming tournament, with matches scheduled in various cities in the USA and the Caribbean. Grant and Gayle are looking forward to the positive impact the event will have on Lauderhill and the surrounding communities, showcasing the city as a dynamic destination for international cricket fans. With a mix of star power and competitive matchups, the T20 World Cup promises to be an unforgettable experience for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
