The Port-of-Spain City Corporation staged the 2024 Easter Bonnet Parade on Knox Street, attracting crowds of children and adults. The competition was held outside the City Corporation building, at the Murchison Brown Auditorium, and welcomed participants of all ages, starting from four years old. The event was inclusive, as it also invited participation from children with special needs.
Port-of-Spain Mayor, Chinua Alleyne, who joined the festivities, applauded the event organizers for their commendable execution. Expressing his delight at the resurrection of the Easter Bonnet Parade at the City Hall Auditorium, Mayor Alleyne anticipated a highly competitive and entertaining event.
This marked Mayor Alleyne’s first Easter Bonnet Parade, and he used the platform to reaffirm the City Corporation’s involvement in the holistic evolution of the city. The 38-year-old mayor emphasized the city’s commitment to not only invest in infrastructure enhancement, but also in cultural growth and entertainment activities that foster active participation from the youth.
Mayor Alleyne mentioned that the City Corporation aims to develop opportunities for young people to engage more in the city’s life. This commitment derives from the recognition that social integration and active engagement in civic activities contribute to the overall well-being and growth of the city’s residents and infrastructure.
The Easter Bonnet Parade is not just a vibrant exhibition of creativity, but it also symbolizes a time-honored tradition related to the festival. The tradition resonates with the spirit of Easter that heralds the renewal of the year, promising spiritual redemption. Through such culturally significant events, the City Corporation hopes to encourage and nourish the sense of community and culture amongst its residents.
