The 2024 Trinidad and Tobago International Marathon saw Alex Ekesa of Kenya and Palmenia Agudelo Berrio of Columbia crowned as male and female champions respectively. Ekesa finished first with a time of two hours 31 minutes and 28 seconds, beating out runners up Colin Pereira (2:36:31) of Trinidad and Tobago and Jose Arrat Diaz of Columbia (2:46:38). For the women, Agudelo emerged victorious with a finishing time of 2:58:23. Following close behind were former champion Shardie Mahabir (3:53:29) and Christine Regis (3:59:10).
The half marathon event saw Philip James clocking in the fastest time of 1:18:25. He was trailed by Keron Ali (1:26:25) and David Schweitzer (1:29:27). Women’s half marathon was dominated by Shari Thomas with a solid lead, her 1:53:37 finish ahead of Swane Oscas (2:00:06) and Kyuwon Son (2:00:29).
The 5k race also saw new champions. A 17-year-old Omare Thompson emerged as the winner with a time of 16 minutes and 31 seconds. He was closely followed by Isah Alder (17:04) and Kiel Samuel (17:27), both of whom were also from the Diego Martin area. All three top male runners were part of local athletic clubs with Thompson and Samuel representing +One A Week, while Alder was a member of the Cougars Track and Field team.
In the women’s 5k, Sarah Guillen led the pack, finishing in 23:43. The silver medal was claimed by Dana Taylor (25:39), and Sharda Beharry (25:50) took home the bronze, finishing third. The marathon, half-marathon, and 5k showcased a variety of talented athletes from around the world all vying for victory in their respective categories.
Overall, the 2024 Trinidad and Tobago International Marathon highlighted athletic prowess from both local and international competitors. From the grueling full marathon to the shorter 5k race, athletes gave their all, resulting in close competition and exciting finishes.
