In Schertz, Texas, local authorities arrested Gabriel Cantu, a 42-year-old fourth-grade teacher at Schertz Elementary School, following a student’s outcry regarding an alleged sex offense. Charged with a felony offense of indecency with a child, Cantu surrendered himself to authorities on Thursday morning. The incident, initially reported by one of Cantu’s students to her parent, shocked the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal-City Independent School District (SCUCISD).
The district denounced the allegations, highlighting that such behavior is absolutely unacceptable. SCUCISD officials reported that the alleged offense occurred during the previous school year. However, officials learned about the charges only during the spring break. The district responded swiftly, placing Cantu on leave immediately upon learning about the allegations and suspending his access to all school technology.
Officials further clarified Cantu’s position stating, “Mr. Cantu will not be returning to SCUC ISD in any capacity.” Cantu was initially hired for the 2022-2023 school year. In light of these serious allegations, the district has stated that it will not retain Cantu’s services for the approaching academic year, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of its students.
As part of its response, SCUCISD will be conducting its internal investigation alongside police inquiry. They vowed to report the incident and its subsequent developments to all relevant individuals and agencies. SCUCISD also announced that the parents of all current and past students who were directly taught by Mr. Cantu will be contacted individually.
Mr. Cantu is currently being held at Guadalupe County Jail, although bond information is yet to be released. Schertz Police Department (SPD) has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and has encouraged anyone with potential information to contact them, thus showing their determination to pursue this case vigorously. The department is available at 210-619-1200 for anyone willing to share relevant details regarding the case.
