A dangerous driving rampage in southeast Edmonton resulted in several charges being laid by the Edmonton Police Service. The incident involved a speeding semi tractor/trailer driving erratically, running a red light, and causing collisions with trees and two vehicles. The incident unfolded on Anthony Henday Drive, where the truck was travelling at approximately 150 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The truck then left the freeway, hitting a parked GMC Sierra, knocking over a tree, and running a red light at an intersection. The truck continued south into the country, reaching speeds of 100 km/h in a 70 km/h zone before turning onto a rural stretch of road.
As the truck turned back north, it rear-ended a Dodge Ram with five people inside, resulting in the driver of the Dodge being taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The other four occupants of the pickup truck were also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. After the collision, the damaged semi veered off the road, hit several more trees, and eventually came to a stop in a field. The driver of the tractor trailer, 39-year-old Dominic Zajac, was not injured in the collision but was arrested by police at the scene. Zajac’s driver’s license has been suspended, and he is facing charges of impaired operation causing bodily harm, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, and refusal to provide a breath sample.
The Edmonton Police Service’s major collision investigations unit is continuing to investigate the incident. The reckless behavior of the driver of the semi tractor/trailer resulted in multiple injuries and significant property damage. The incident highlighted the dangers of dangerous driving and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions on the road. The charges laid against Zajac reflect the seriousness of the incident and the potential harm caused by his actions. The investigation by the EPS is ongoing as they work to gather more information and evidence related to the case.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with dangerous driving and the importance of following traffic laws and regulations. The actions of one individual can have far-reaching consequences, impacting the lives of others and causing harm and damage. The charges laid in this case are intended to send a message that dangerous driving will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable. The EPS is committed to ensuring the safety of the community and will continue to investigate incidents of this nature to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
