A grotesque video circulating on social media appears to show a man in Bakersfield, California carrying a severed body part from a train collision scene in Wasco. The video was recorded after a fatal train incident where a person was hit around 8:05 a.m near G and 7th streets in Wasco. Kern County Fire Department was in the process of responding to the report when the incident occurred. A witness recalled the man appeared to be carrying a severed leg.
The man was later identified as Resendo Tellez, who was arrested for removing evidence from the scene. Tellez was apprehended shortly after at 7th and F streets in connection with the incident, according to inmate records. The Sheriff’s office confirmed Tellez’s involvement on Friday afternoon.
Following his arrest, Tellez was booked into jail on charges of taking evidence from the scene and for outstanding warrants. BNSF is investigating the initial train collision that resulted in one fatality. In addition to his current charges, Tellez is also booked on a charge of removing or mutilating human remains according to inmate records.
Locals were urged to contact the sheriff’s office with any information about the incident. The event marks potentially the second time this year that human remains were unlawfully removed from a crash scene in this community. Previously, someone reportedly brought a severed hand to a local shelter a few days after another train collided with a pedestrian in east Bakersfield, about three weeks prior to the current incident.
The origins of the alleged severed hand are still unknown. Carlos Baldovinos, executive director of The Mission at Kern County, explained that he wasn’t present for the incident but was made aware of it. Despite law enforcement notification, police were unable to locate any call for service at the shelter on the day the hand was allegedly brought there. Union Pacific investigators, working on the east Bakersfield train crash case, assured all body parts were accounted for.
