Former Service Ontario employee helped disguise 100 stolen vehicles, Toronto police say

Toronto police said Friday during an update on a major auto theft and re-vinning investigation that a former Service Ontario employee was helping the suspects disguise stolen vehicles by providing falsified documents and license plates.

Police allege the Service Ontario employee created new, legitimate vehicle registrations and license plates for stolen vehicles that were used to re-vin the vehicles to make them appear legitimate.

“The stolen vehicles, now with new identities were sold to unsuspecting buyers or used in other criminal activities throughout the city,” explained Det. Dan Grayling of the 53 Division Major Crime Unit.

Police say to evade detection some vehicles were registered to people who had died or did not exist.
Four people have been arrested and 28 charges laid in connection with this scheme, Det. Grayling says. Of the 100 vehicles stolen and re-vinned, police have recovered 21 vehicles worth between $1.5 to $1.8 million.

Get a vehicle report. Sounds like a good idea. BUT THEY AIN'T FREE. MAKE THEM FREE AND EVERYONE WOULD PLUG IN IN 5 SECONDS.

    Release all the NAMES

  • @rolandm9750 June 26, 2024

Should investigate that clown officer that said to leave your keys out for the thieves–probably in on it too.

  • It's pathetic that the press didn't ask more and tougher questions of the Police at this press announcement. The Service Ontario is now actually a 'DIsservice Ontario' and needs to make this type of activity impossible. The Motor Vehicle Bureau MVB needs to make press releases for the public to inform themselves and protect themselves about this stolen vehicles MVB scam and threat to all Ontario citizens.

All Canadian cops are the enemy of the people ?

  • @daryabaghdar4340 June 26, 2024

Thanks for your effort to make society a safer place to live.
When you call this operation a project, does this mean after closing it there won’t be any investigation or any effort for future crimes of these types until defining and budgeting another project?

There are bad apples everywhere. Can we stop with the "oh, it must be this group of people who did it." This type of mentality is what divides us.

  • @hunter5369 June 26, 2024

As usual the criminals, will get no punishment, the public will bear the financial cist of this, insurance companies will jack up the cost to all

  • @Cardus501 June 26, 2024

It's probably just the tip of the iceberg but a good win just the same. How do they re vin the ECU? If the car is ever hooked up to an OBD device the vin is in the computer. I feel sorry for those who truly didn't know their vehicle was hot.

Large-scale organized crime is not possible without substantial support from governments. It's not the crime bosses that are most guilty but whatever officials stand behind them.

Canada is a great country and it’s better than most countries out there. Change starts from you.

  • @Dr.BertFegg June 26, 2024

Name names please, I highly doubt the crooks were underage, so apprehended suspects names should be provided. By not naming them, and this being Canada, most assume the criminals are the usual suspects- Black, Asian, or east Indian, hence not releasing names as to not offend minorities, public safety be damned. This has been a long standing pattern with CTV & CBC. It's disgusting.

  • @sassycindy311 June 26, 2024
