Guyana’s ambassador to the United Nations, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, criticized a recent draft resolution put forward by the US for a cease-fire in Gaza, where the death toll has risen to over 32,000. The resolution, which was vetoed by Russia and China, did not attribute responsibility for the deaths in Gaza to the Israeli authorities. Rodrigues-Birkett questioned why the demands in the resolution were not clearly addressed to the occupying power and argued that it would be difficult to ascertain which party in the conflict was committing atrocities in Gaza based on the resolution alone.
She also stated that the resolution should not be linked or made conditional upon the release of hostages. The taking of hostages is strictly prohibited under international law, and their release must be unconditional. Guyana reiterated its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, emphasizing that the Palestinian people should not be collectively punished or held hostage for the crimes of others. Rodrigues-Birkett stressed that two wrongs cannot make a right in this situation.
Israeli forces continued an offensive on the Gaza Strip’s main hospital where they claimed Hamas forces were based. The Associated Press reported that over 210,000 people in northern Gaza are suffering from catastrophic hunger, with experts warning that famine is imminent in the region. Amidst these dire circumstances, the conflict between Israel and Palestine continues to escalate, with a lack of clarity on who is responsible for the ongoing violence and loss of life in Gaza.
Rodrigues-Birkett called for greater accountability and specific demands to be made in the resolution towards the occupying power in Gaza. She highlighted the need for compliance with international law regarding the protection of civilians and humanitarian access, expressing concern that the resolution did not clearly address the parties responsible for the atrocities in Gaza. By not attributing responsibility to the Israeli authorities, the resolution failed to provide a clear path towards a resolution of the conflict and ensuring the protection of civilians in the region.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with the death toll rising and reports of imminent famine adding to the humanitarian crisis in the region. As efforts to secure a cease-fire falter and the conflict shows no signs of abating, there is a pressing need for international intervention and accountability to address the root causes of the violence and prevent further loss of life. The stance taken by Rodrigues-Birkett at the UN reflects a call for justice, accountability, and a commitment to upholding international law to protect the rights and lives of civilians caught in the crossfire of the conflict in Gaza.
