Identity Theft A Rising Concern For Many Taxpayers: How To Avoid The Trouble #IDtheft Can Cause You

The IRS recommends signing up for an IP PIN to address the mountain of tax returns getting rejected due to identity theft causing taxpayers a lot of trouble.

Out of the dozens of tax compliance cases we’ve handled this year, we find that at least 2 out of 10 taxpayers are experiencing identity theft. This causes a great deal of trouble for them as we cannot address #identitytheft issues for them.

Generally, if your tax return is rejected you must:

1. Visit
and follow the prompts or
2. Call the Taxpayer Protection Program at 800-830-5084 7a to 7p, your local time (hold times vary)
3. Have a copy of your rejected return as well as the tax return for the current year available for your call or when using the online service
4. Provide the IRS agent with info from your returns to confirm your identity
5. After the call, they may require that you mail in a paper return to replace the rejected return, or they may process the rejected return if authorized by you and it is still available for processing
6. If you are required to mail a paper return, you must await your paper return to be received then await your paper return to be processed, causing refund delays or more interest and penalties.

Your return may get ‘flagged’ for identity theft for several reasons here a few #common reasons:

• You entered the wrong IP PIN. You were previously assigned an IP PIN and entered it incorrectly when submitting your return
• If someone else already e-filed your original return and you subsequently attempted to e-file your return yourself

Typically, Letter 5071C is mailed as soon as your return is ‘flagged’ by IRS for #identitytheft. You can find additional instructions in this letter.

To avoid the trouble, we recommend that everyone sign up for an IP PIN. A new IP PIN will be auto-generated every year for you to use to file your next return or provide it to your tax preparer.

The Security Summit is well-underway. We hope the IRS can provide an easier way to clear identity theft issues. In the meantime, we recommend that sign up to keep your name and identity safe and your tax return save from delays.
