Jamaica’s junior athletes are dominating the competition at the 51st Carifta Games in Grenada, with a total of 49 medals – 24 gold, 15 silver, and 10 bronze. Javontae Smith and Nastassia Fletcher stood out on the second day, with Smith breaking the shot put record and Fletcher securing gold in the 400m hurdles. Other standout performances included Robert Miller winning the Boys’ Under-17 400m hurdles and Shamer Blake leading a one-two finish for Jamaica in the Boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles.
In the sprint relays, Jamaica continued their winning streak with victories in three out of the four events. The Under-17 girls’ team dominated the 4x100m relay, while the Boys’ Under-17 and Girls’ Under-20 teams also secured first place. Despite a baton exchange mishap, the Boys’ Under-20 team finished second in their relay. Jamaica also claimed a bronze medal in the Mixed 4x400m relay. Overall, the team’s performance showcased their strength and dominance in regional youth athletics.
Individual gold medal performances by Kimeka Smith in the Girls’ Under-20 shot put and Rickoy Hunter in the Boys’ Under-20 shot put added to Jamaica’s medal haul. Chavez Penn continued his impressive form by winning the Boys’ Under-20 high jump title. The momentum from these victories sets the stage for an exciting final day of competition on Monday, with events starting at 8:00 am Jamaica time.
With their standout performances and impressive medal count, Jamaica’s junior athletes are on track to surpass last year’s 78-medal haul at the Carifta Games. The team’s dominance is evident in their commanding lead in the medal standings, with the Bahamas and Guyana trailing behind. Smith and Fletcher’s record-breaking efforts, along with strong relay performances, highlight Jamaica’s depth and talent in youth athletics. As the competition continues, all eyes will be on Jamaica’s athletes as they aim to reaffirm their status as regional champions.
