The Rotaract Club of South Barbados, funded by PwC East Caribbean, donated a Little Book Library to the Luther Thorne Memorial Primary School to promote a culture of leisure reading among students. President of the Rotaract Club, Khrystal Walcott, emphasized the importance of reading in developing imagination and creativity, hoping that the library will transport students to new worlds through the pages of a book. Basic Education and Literacy is a key focus for Rotary International, under which Rotaract Clubs worldwide were formed, making the donation significant in encouraging reading among students. PwC East Caribbean has been a key partner to the club, supporting initiatives such as the Rotaract Reading Room sessions for children ages 6-11 years hosted at the school since 2021.
The donation of the Little Book Library came just after the global celebration of World Rotaract Day on March 13, marking 56 years since the first club was established in North Carolina. Territory Leader of PwC East Caribbean, Ross Parker, highlighted the importance of inspiring a new generation of readers through the library, as books have the ability to entertain, educate, and inspire action. The partnership between PwC and Rotaract aims to encourage a love for reading among students, enhancing their knowledge and creativity through the power of books. The school’s Senior Teacher, Alison Cumberbatch, expressed gratitude for the little library and believes it will further ignite the enthusiasm for reading among both students and staff at the school.
