Haitian international, Melchie Daelle Dumornay, made her Champions League debut on Tuesday in Portugal during the first leg of the quarterfinal between Olympique Lyonnais and Benfica, a match where her team emerged victorious with a 2-1 score. Entering the game 55 minutes in, Dumornay quickly made her presence felt by allowing the Lyon team to equalize the score, as they had been behind at half-time.
Dumornay was quick and agile in the match; when served within the Portuguese area, she executed an impressive backheel pass, thus enabling Delphine Cascarino to score an equalizing goal. This unexpected move from the young player took the Portuguese defense by surprise as they were likely anticipating a direct shot from the Haitian player.
In an illustrious first run, the 20-year-old Haitian striker became the first Haitian woman to compete in a Champions League match. In doing so, she joined the exclusive group of Haitians to have competed in this highly acclaimed tournament, including renowned players like Frantzdy Pierrot and Donald Guerrier.
While she didn’t score a goal in her inaugural match in this coveted tournament, she was nonetheless crucial in Olympique Lyonnais’ victory on Benfica’s playing field. Upon returning to the field following months of absence, she proved critical in the Champions League, showcasing her skills and reminding everyone why she’s considered one of the best players globally.
Following her successful debut, Dumornay will have the opportunity to open her score account in the Champions League during the second-leg match, which will be played next Wednesday on her home ground in Lyon.
