A 23-year-old man has been charged with robbery after allegedly robbing a fellow VLT player with a machete at a St. James hotel in Winnipeg earlier this month. The incident took place on May 16 around 6:30 p.m. when Winnipeg Police responded to a call at a hotel gaming room on Berry Street. The victim, a 59-year-old man, was playing VLTs when the suspect struck up a conversation with him. Suddenly, the suspect brandished a machete and robbed the victim of approximately $130. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, leaving the victim unharmed.
Upon returning to the same establishment to play VLTs on Sunday evening, the suspect was recognized by staff as the perpetrator of the initial robbery. Law enforcement was notified, but the suspect managed to evade capture before their arrival. However, just over an hour later, officers apprehended the suspect in the 1800 block of Ellice Avenue without any resistance. During the arrest, a machete was found concealed on the suspect’s person, which was seized as evidence. Following his arrest, the Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and charged the 23-year-old from Winnipeg with robbery, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, and failing to comply with a probation order. The suspect was remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
The brazen robbery at the St. James hotel highlights the dangers associated with gambling establishments and the potential for violence to erupt in such environments. The victim, who was simply trying his luck on the VLT machines, never expected to fall victim to such a violent crime. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safety and security measures in public places where large sums of money are involved. Police commend the swift action of the staff in recognizing the suspect upon his return and alerting authorities, leading to his eventual arrest and the recovery of the weapon used in the robbery.
The arrest of the 23-year-old suspect brings a sense of justice to the victim and the community at large, as individuals who engage in violent criminal behavior must be held accountable for their actions. In addition to the charges of robbery and possession of a weapon, the suspect also faces charges for carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with a probation order, indicating a history of criminal activity. The seriousness of these charges underscores the need for a thorough investigation and prosecution to ensure that the suspect is not a danger to society.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale for those who frequent gaming establishments, emphasizing the importance of staying vigilant and aware of one’s surroundings at all times. The quick response and coordination between law enforcement and hotel staff were crucial in apprehending the suspect and preventing further harm. By working together, the community can send a strong message that criminal behavior will not be tolerated, and those who commit such acts will face the full consequences of the law. As the legal process unfolds, the victim and the community can find solace in knowing that justice is being served and steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
