In Escambia County, Florida, a Pensacola man was apprehended on Sunday after allegedly refusing to pay a taxi driver and shooting at him. The man, identified as 21-year-old Je’Teris Damon Peaks, was arrested after deputies responded to reports of shots fired at the intersection of North L Street and Avery Street. According to a Facebook post from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies discovered that the incident began when a Z Trip driver picked up Peaks on Paula Avenue and was supposed to drop him off at a Family Dollar store on North Pace Boulevard.
The taxi driver reportedly explained to the deputies that Peaks refused to remunerate his fare, prompting the driver to follow Peaks around the block. It was then that Peaks allegedly fired bullets at the driver, hitting and shattering the vehicle’s rear window. After the shooting, the driver managed to find a nearby deputy who had also heard the gunshots. The driver gave a description of Peaks and his last known whereabouts to the deputy.
The deputy located Peaks, however, the suspect tried to escape and reportedly pointed a firearm at the authorities. Reacting to this threat, the deputies shot Peaks, who was subsequently taken to the hospital to receive medical attention. Following the encounter, Peaks was arrested and has been charged with a series of crimes.
Charges against Peaks include three counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest. Fortunately, neither the deputies involved nor the taxi driver sustained any injuries in the violent altercation. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded to the scene and is currently investigating the police-involved shooting.
