Albuquerque resident Guadalupe Antonio Navarrete has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison followed by 6 years of supervised release for cyberstalking and murdering Jane Doe. Navarrete, a convicted felon, was also found guilty of possessing a firearm and ammunition. His sentences come without the capacity for parole, as this does not exist in the federal system.
Navarrete’s crimes were discovered on November 18, 2022, when Lea County Sheriff Deputies arrived at his Hobbs residence. They had been called there due to a complaint about an unwelcome individual on the premises. They found Jane Doe’s lifeless body with a gunshot wound to her temple in her car’s driver’s seat.
Investigations revealed that Navarrete had been bombarding Jane Doe with threatening text messages and voicemails leading up to her murder. This included a message threatening to shoot her just hours before it happened, and a menacing voicemail minutes before the act.
Evidence showed that Navarrete shot Jane Doe while sitting in the back seat of her vehicle. He fired the fatal shot through the front passenger headrest, fatally wounding her in the temple as she was seated in the driver’s seat and leaning over the front passenger area.
On March 10, 2023, Navarrete pleaded guilty to cyberstalking resulting in life-threatening bodily injury and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The case was investigated by the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from the Lea County Sheriff’s Department. Charges were prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Joni Autrey Stahl and Mark A. Saltman.
