The Portsmouth Police Department (PPD) held a R.E.S.E.T. walk in Portsmouth, Virginia on Tuesday in response to two shootings that occurred in the Prentis Park Neighborhood on Sunday. The walk was aimed at fostering community healing and resilience following the violence. The walk took place at 3 p.m. on March 19 at the intersection of Chestnut and Jefferson streets.
Both shooting incidents, which happened on Chestnut Street, have caused heightened concern within the community. The first shooting occurred around 2 a.m., when 29-year-old Damarcus Dildy was found with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced dead at the scene. His death has raised concerns about the safety of the community and the need for efforts to stem the violence.
A second incident happened barely a few blocks away from the scene of the first shooting later that day around 7:30 p.m. This time, a woman was found with a gunshot wound and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, she is expected to survive her injuries, adding to the urgency of the call for unity and peace in the neighborhood.
As of now, the police have not released any suspect information related to either of the shootings. The lack of information regarding the guilty parties has caused considerable anxiety among residents, adding impetus to the R.E.S.E.T. walk’s goals of strengthening community bonds and resilience in the face of adversity and uncertainty.
Through events like the R.E.S.E.T. walk, the Portsmouth Police Department is actively encouraging residents to support each other as the community begins to heal. Updates on the walk, the investigations into the shootings, and the overall situation in the Prentis Park Neighborhood are expected to be shared in due course via PPD’s Facebook handle and local news updates on WAVY.com.
