Dr Simone Badal McCreath, a renowned anti-cancer researcher and Senior Lecturer at The University of the West Indies, Mona, was honored at a distinguished lecture series for creating the first prostate and breast cancer cell lines derived from Black individuals. The three-day event included the launch of her book, “No Cell Left Behind”, a laboratory tour, and a distinguished lecture. Dr Badal McCreath’s research focuses on breast and prostate cancer, specifically targeting the Afro-Caribbean population. Her groundbreaking work has provided scientists with cell lines to better understand and develop treatments for these cancers in Black individuals.
During the book launch, Dr Badal McCreath’s students shared their enthusiasm for her work, with graduate student Ms Chelsi James expressing that she could not put the book down. The laboratory tour provided attendees with a glimpse into the research process, showcasing the techniques used in cell culture. Dr Badal McCreath emphasized the importance of creating cell models that reflect the diversity of cancer patients, particularly for Black individuals. Her work aims to level the playing field in cancer research by providing scientists with tools to study and treat prostate and breast cancer in this demographic.
At the conclusion of the event series, The UWI Mona/VM Group Distinguished Lecture highlighted the impact of Dr Badal McCreath’s research on prostate cancer. The Principal of UWI Mona, Prof. Densil Williams, commended her achievements and the resources available at the institution. VM Group President and CEO, Courtney Campbell, praised the partnership with The UWI Mona and the groundbreaking nature of Dr Badal McCreath’s research. The collaboration between academia and industry has the potential to transform cancer research and foster innovation in the field.
Dr Badal McCreath’s groundbreaking research underscores The UWI, Mona’s commitment to supporting talented researchers and promoting excellence in Caribbean research. The creation of the first prostate and breast cancer cell lines derived from Black individuals is a testament to the university’s dedication to advancing medicine and science. The success of ‘The Simone Badal Week’ highlights the impact of collaborative efforts between academia and industry in driving meaningful discoveries that benefit diverse populations.
