The much-anticipated refurbishment of the Philipsburg Market Place in Sint Maarten, a popular Caribbean destination, has been officially approved. Arthur Lambriex, the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation & Telecommunication (TEATT), announced the news, stating that all necessary preparations have been completed to launch the project, having obtained requisite ministerial approval.
Vendors operating in Philipsburg have been notified about an impending temporary relocation to an allocated site near the old Government Administration Building. This transition is intended to allow vendors to continue their trade while the reconstruction is underway. Furthermore, a groundbreaking ceremony for the project, viewed as a crucial improvement for the area, will be announced soon.
The project has been long-awaited, particularly following damage caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. The completion of the reconstruction is expected within three months from the starting date. According to Lambriex, the result will contribute to the overall beautification and attractiveness of Philipsburg, potentially driving increased foot traffic to the area.
The execution of the project has seen some issues in the past, including administrative challenges and several false starts. The proposal has gone through at least three revised designs in the course of interactions with multiple governments in the bid to actualize the project over the past six years.
In his statement, Lambriex thanked Philipsburg Market Place vendors for enduring the difficult conditions to provide visitors with cherished memories during this period. He considers the Market Place a crucial part of the renovating and beautification plans for Philipsburg. The Ministry of TEATT’s goal is to make Philipsburg a unique and accessible place for residents and visitors to Sint Maarten.

Shouldnt they focus on improving infrastructure first before market reconstruction?
Market reconstruction can create economic opportunities and stimulate growth, which in turn can help fund infrastructure improvements. Its not an either/or situation – both aspects are important for overall development. Lets support progress on multiple fronts for a stronger future.
