Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken Retrospective And Why I LOVE IT!

Well it’s finally the one year anniversary of Dreamworks Animation’s Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken. This movie was the entire reason I made my channel to defend it and bring attention in a time when it felt like no one would. And while I hoped that soon after the movie would eventually get the respect it deserves unfortunately it seemed like the worst case scenario happened and it became one of the infamous movies released last years where it’s hated to the point where people can’t even talk about it. But I’m not going to let it slide, I am going to stand up for this amazing movie once again and I’m going all out practically a year later with the amount of additions and insight I’ve gotten since. I literally was able to talk about it positively for two hours. I think there’s so much in here that no one really understands or appreciates from how amazing and spectacular the animation is, to how engaging and well executed the plot and characters are, defending it against the criticisms it gets, and especially my new appreciation and love for Ruby as a character and how truly great her character journey is. I’m defending against the claims that its generic or just not as good as Puss in Boots 2 because there’s so much more to this movie that its overhated and underrated. So please give it a watch and understand my undying love for it and what it means to me.

I really liked this movie and really can't understand alot of the critisms it gets. This video was really good especially at addresing the unfairness of fanbases. One thing i definitely don't understand is the Ruby and Chelsea shipping. That just weirds me out. I actually like her and Connor together more.

Don’t let anybody bash your opinion on this movie.

If it isn't obvious, I'm an Elemental fan (mainly an Ember fan), and after seeing the mind-numbing discourse that surrounded that film until its release, when people started appreciating it after making sweeping statements for months based on one trailer, I grew a short tolerance for click-baity youtube critics, and sympathize with people who have to deal with un-necessary hatred about a piece of media.

People love to dunk on Ruby Gilman by saying the trailer spoiled the big twist, but I think it's rather dumb to hate or critique a film because of its trailer. That's another thing, I think the unfair amounts of money people get for early as possible negative reviews and predictions, as opposed to more of an un-bias opinion not catered to the popular consensus, is actively hurting media in general.

I am honestly okay with Chelsea being Nerissa/ Chelsea being Nerissa's daughter but if people start b*tching about that saying that the movie would be better if it were like that, than it's just annoying.

Oh hell no. I totally can get behind defending ruby gillman but do you not bash Trolls 3 in the way of it!

  • I like the movie and think it’s pretty underrated

You know you’ve done a good job making your main character adorkable when even people who didn’t like the movie agree that she’s cute

Really good video man. I have liked this movie since it came out and I thought you brought up some great points. If anything it makes me wanna see your thoughts on all the Dreamworks films since you’ve done quite a bit of Dreamworks videos already. I really liked Ruby Gillman and I’m glad that others do as well.

We need more genuine teenage stories in animation things like tmnt mutant mayhem and turning red are huge examples of that and even though this does that to a lesser degree it does deserve more attention it's really cool how you stand by what you believe in this is a very great video 😁

  • @bitterflywing July 2, 2024

I liked it tbh. The only thing I wish would have been different is if Narissa and Chelsea could have been seperate people and Ruby and Chelsea could have gone to prom together as the first ever sapphics.
Also I like a movie where the mother and daughter are actually nice to eachother.

  • @doublet6118 July 2, 2024

GOD. You have no idea how nice it feels to see you rip into the claim that Ruby is ripping off Turning Red. I hate that claim so much because if you ACTUALLY WATCH both films they are completely different. Literally the only things REMOTELY similar is they have teenage leads and can turn into something but even THAT is still different between the two. I'm so glad to see there are still people out there willing to give Ruby a chance because she absolutely deserves it!

  • I agree with most of what you've said in this video. I loved the art style, animation, music, and characters (especially Ruby who I also related to and is one of my favorite Dreamworks protagonists). I especially love "This Moment" the song and the scene are two of my favorites in all of Dreamworks.

The movie is one of my favorite Dreamworks films. I agree with most of your defenses, but I feel I should address something about one of them. The racism. I agree with you, but for different reasons and I'm a little more conflicted since I think it should have been handled a bit differently.

No hate intended here (against you or the movie), I'm just trying to explain myself, please don't hate me for this. My two cents on this topic is a bit complicated (probably more so than it was intended to be in the movie), but much like the movie says, there's more beneath the surface.

Now to address the criticisms some people have given. It's not so much the fact that it has an "evil fantasy race" but more so what the movie does with that. The fact that Grandmamah says they're selfish vain narcissists (the movie never really says whether it's by nature or by choice), the fact that she tries to genocide them even after they were defeated, the fact that Ruby gave Chelsea a chance despite what her grandmother claimed, and the fact that Chelsea turned out to be evil anyway implying that Grandmamah was right. Not so much having an "evil fantasy race," but having a character express prejudice, having the protagonist give a member of the group a chance anyway, only for the prejudiced perspective to be (supposedly) proven right.

This is something no other story that uses the trope does, that I'm aware of, at least in the same way. The amount of emphasis put on "mermaids are super evil" by the marketing and to a lesser extent the film itself didn't help. The problem I have with the racism claim is that it leaves out the most important factor, the protagonist. Ruby never agrees with the viewpoint of Grandmamah, giving Nerissa a chance to stop and choosing to spare her when she's no longer a threat. Ruby is at least implied as being in the right for this. Also Grandmamah is implied as being an unreliable narrator with Brill calling her a warlord and Agatha berating her saying "you just love to fight!" So I personally disagree with the idea that the movie is racist.

Despite this there are still problems that I have. Like how Chelsea being Nerissa's daughter would have helped this for me. Her looking for revenge would keep her as the villain while giving her a motivation other than "because I'm evil," made her friendship with Ruby at least somewhat genuine, have given her a motivation that resulted from Grandmamah's warmongering tendency (since the movie doesn't really acknowledge it that much after the argument with Agatha). In the deleted scene you mention Agatha says "that's not who I am anymore" and "Mom, not helping" implying that she really doesn't want to fight. You say that Agatha having killed Nerissa would have complicated this, but there is a simple solution, just make it so after her defeat Nerissa left and hasn't been seen since. Also because it would have given so much more weight to Ruby sparing Chelsea after the fight. The movie also has a message about how prejudice is bad, but it's a bit undercut for me because it didn't come to as substantial conclusion on this topic as I personally would have liked (whether the mermaids are evil by nature or by choice). Again, it's not that a more complex motivation is better just because, but because it would have made this story specifically stronger.

That's probably why all of the fanfiction I've read about the movie make it so Chelsea actually was Nerissa's daughter (including the one I'm writing).

I still love the movie despite this because I enjoyed it's stronger aspects that much. Again no hate intended (against you or the movie I just have a lot of complicated thoughts about this topic. Sorry this was so long, I'm probably overthinking this, ( I'm told I probably have ADHD).

    Love the video.

Just an out of pocket comment. Wouldn’t of this final fight as great as it was be 1,000 times better if Godzilla showed up lol. 😂

(Random teen) “Godzilla could not beat that thing in a fight.”
(Monstervere Godzilla) “Are you challenging me?”

  • @BlackSoul4876 July 2, 2024

You are just as insightful about it now than you were a year ago. Thank you! 👏😁 😎👍

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is one of my all-time favorite DreamWorks films ever, and I also bought a DVD of the film. Also, there should be an animated TV series based on that film. 🦑
