A Salem man, Lucas Smith, was arrested after a 10-month-old child was hospitalized for ingesting cocaine. Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and determined that the child had come into contact with cocaine at Smith’s home. The child was admitted to Glens Falls Hospital and then transferred to Albany Medical Center, where they are currently in a pediatric intensive care unit.
Smith is facing several charges in connection with the incident, including second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a firearm, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was held at the Washington County Jail to await arraignment at Centralized Arraignment.
This incident highlights the dangers of drug exposure to young children and the serious consequences that can result from negligence or illicit drug use in homes with children present. The investigation into how the child came into contact with the cocaine is ongoing, and further details may emerge as law enforcement continues to gather information.
Cases like this serve as a reminder of the importance of keeping drugs and other harmful substances out of reach of children and ensuring that proper safety measures are in place to prevent accidental ingestion or exposure. The child’s well-being is of utmost importance, and swift action was taken to seek medical treatment and hold the responsible party accountable for their actions.
The child’s condition will continue to be monitored in the pediatric intensive care unit at Albany Medical Center as the investigation progresses and legal proceedings unfold. The authorities are working to ensure that justice is served in this case and to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future by raising awareness of the dangers of drug exposure to children.
