On March 21, 2024, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) engaged in a joint police operation across several communities in the Central and Northern Divisions of Saint Lucia, specifically Assou Canal, Gros-Islet and Sarrot in Castries. The operation involved executing three search warrants which resulted in the arrest of three individuals.
During the operation, police officers carried out a search of a residential property in Sarrot, Castries, and seized a homemade shotgun and four rounds of 20-gauge ammunition. This search and seizure precipitated the arrest of the three people found in the building at the time.
The trio taken into custody was comprised of two males and one female: twenty-five-year-old Curt Richelieu of Marisule, Gros-Islet; thirty-five-year-old Jonas James of Sarrot, Castries; and 37-year-old Ania James. All three were arrested and charged with the possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
Following the arrests, the trio was taken before the First District Court, where they had the opportunity to apply for bail. Ania James and Jonas James were granted bail, with conditions including a cash sum of twenty thousand dollars, suitable surety, or land documents. In contrast, the third defendant, Curt Richelieu, was taken into custody.
Further investigation into Curt Richelieu’s circumstances revealed a significant legal impediment; he faced an outstanding Commitment Warrant due to his non-payment of a court fine. The non-payment apparently related to his previous convictions for similar charges to those currently being brought against him – namely the possession of a firearm and ammunition.
