A man named Rosemond Etienne has been sentenced to four years in prison after admitting possession of a banned assault rifle near his residence on Wilson Tract. The 27-year-old was charged by Magistrate Lennox Coleby with possession of a prohibited weapon and ammunition. Etienne was represented by Alphonso Lewis and Levan Johnson.
The police discovered the black Serbian AK-47, along with 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition wrapped in a blue cloth inside an abandoned minivan near Etienne’s house on March 19th, leading to his arrest. Following his guilty plea, Etienne’s attorney, Mr. Lewis, expressed that his client is deeply remorseful for his actions and has cooperated with the police since the beginning.
Mr. Lewis further stressed that Etienne pled guilty at the earliest chance to save the court’s time. He also revealed that Etienne is a working father. The attorney pleaded with the magistrate to show mercy and leniency in handing down the sentencing.
Magistrate Coleby, whilst delivering the sentence, instructed that Etienne will serve the 48 months at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services. During this time, he will be enrolled in plumbing and electrical classes, hinting towards giving the convict a chance at rehabilitation.
Before being taken into remand, Etienne was allowed a brief period to spend with relatives who were present in the courtroom. This action was likely meant to offer some emotional solace to the defendant and his family before he officially begins his prison term.

Four years for an assault rifle? Seems harsh. What about rehabilitation instead?
Rehabilitation for someone wielding an assault rifle? Seriously? Lets prioritize the safety of innocent people over coddling criminals. Four years is a lenient sentence considering the potential harm that weapon could have caused. Justice served.
This sentence seems harsh, considering lighter penalties for other crimes.
Maybe those other crimes should have harsher penalties, instead of complaining about this one. Just because something else is lenient doesnt mean this should be too. Lets focus on justice for all, not comparing who got off easier.
Doesnt four years for an assault rifle seem too lenient? Lets discuss. 🤔
Cant believe the sentence was only four years! Justice system needs an overhaul.
Shouldnt the sentence be harsher for possessing such a dangerous weapon?
The sentence should fit the crime. Possessing a weapon doesnt automatically mean a harsh sentence is warranted. Its about the circumstances and intent. Justice isnt about being harsh for the sake of it, but about being fair and appropriate.
Do you think four years is enough for possessing an assault rifle?
Absolutely not. The potential harm and devastation caused by assault rifles far outweigh any perceived benefits of ownership. Four years or even a lifetime is too long for anyone to possess such a weapon designed for mass destruction. Safety and common sense should always come first.
Shouldnt sentences be based on intent rather than possession alone?
Who decides what sentence is fair for possessing an assault rifle? Lets discuss!
Why only four years for such a serious crime? Justice system fail?
Shouldnt the sentence be harsher for possessing such a dangerous weapon?
