India Oxenberg, actress and survivor of the notorious NXIVM sex cult, opened up about her harrowing experiences during a recent interview on “The FOX True Crime Podcast”. Raised in Los Angeles, Oxenberg stated that her background might have affected her hindsight in recognizing the dangers of the so-called self-help group based in New York, which eventually subjected her to various forms of physical and mental abuse.
Oxenberg, who was introduced to the cult at only 19 years old by a trusted friend, shared that she was initially enchanted by its offer of personal development classes, which were attended by various high-profile figures. The program was described in a way that made it seem logically impactful, promising to overcome individual fears and limitations in their belief system. She soon became emotionally and physically consumed by the group, resulting in the deterioration of relationships with friends and family due to her unwavering belief in the group’s false claims of financial rewards.
Five years into her involvement with NXIVM, Oxenberg was introduced to a “cult within a cult” called “DOS” by co-conspirator, Allison Mack. Members of DOS, primarily women, were subjected to branding, the provision of nude images, and false confessions for use as blackmail, as well as forced sex. Oxenberg described strong pressures to confirm and was led to believe that the horrifying activities being inflicted upon her were for her own good. This powerful and psychologically damaging narrative left Oxenberg incapable of recognizing the situation for what it was.
Oxenberg was finally able to escape the group seven years after her initial involvement. She immediately began cooperating with the FBI, an experience she describes as being integral to her recovery process. The information she provided contributed to the prosecution of cult founder, Keith Raniere, who was sentenced to 120 years of prison for sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, and a conspiracy to commit forced labor.
Now residing in Key West, Florida with her husband and cats, Oxenberg has successfully rebuilt her life after her escape from the cult. Reflecting on her ordeal, she stated she feels “proud” and “lucky” that her abuser faced justice for his crimes. She hopes her story can establish a precedent for other survivors’ battles against their perpetrators.

I dont buy her story. Sounds like shes just seeking attention.
Maybe you should try listening instead of judging. Peoples experiences are valid, whether you understand them or not. Your skepticism says more about you than it does about her. Open your mind before you open your mouth.
I think she shouldve known better. Cant blame it all on brainwashing.
I know its controversial, but maybe she wasnt brainwashed – just manipulated? 🤔
I see your point, but manipulation often involves a level of deception and coercion that can result in a form of brainwashing. Its a fine line, but the impact on the individuals autonomy and decision-making is undeniable. Just my two cents.
Wow, she fell for it? Cant believe people get sucked into cults.
Its easy to sit back and judge from a distance. But until youve walked in someone elses shoes, maybe try showing a little empathy instead of criticism. People join cults for various reasons, often seeking belonging or meaning in their lives. Its not as simple as falling for it.
I think she should take responsibility for her choices. Brainwashing or not, we all choose.
Shes a victim of manipulation, not just making choices. Have some empathy and understanding. Its not always black and white. Walk a mile in her shoes before passing judgment.
I think she should take responsibility for joining in the first place.
Its not about blaming her for joining, its about holding those accountable who exploit and manipulate others. Victim-blaming only perpetuates the cycle of abuse. Lets focus on addressing the root of the issue instead of shifting blame onto the vulnerable.
Could she have escaped earlier if she recognized the signs?
Maybe if she wasnt blinded by fear or denial, she could have seen the warning signs and escaped sooner. Ignoring the signs only prolongs the inevitable. Its a harsh reality, but sometimes we need to open our eyes and act before its too late.
