Teen’s blunt words after crashing car into house

Spencer Chalcroft was involved in a high-speed chase with police after being spotted speeding through a town at night. When officers signaled him to stop, he instead drove off, leading them on a chase at speeds of up to 70 mph in 30 mph zones. The chase came to a dramatic end when Chalcroft lost control of his car at a T-junction and crashed into a wall of a residential property. At the scene, he expressed regret, saying that he was trying to get his life together. He was later arrested and found to be under the influence of cannabis.

During the court sentencing at Reading Crown Court, the judge criticized Chalcroft for his reckless driving, stating that it was fortunate that only property was damaged and not someone’s life. The prosecution informed the court that the incident took place on December 27, when officers attempted to stop Chalcroft’s Ford Fiesta in Wokingham, Berkshire. Despite the police lights and siren, Chalcroft accelerated away, leading to the crash. He was charged with driving dangerously, failing to stop, and possession of cannabis, to which he pleaded guilty.

Defense counsel Matthew Ness highlighted that Chalcroft had been suffering from severe depression and PTSD due to a past violent crime. This caused his actions on the night of the incident to be out of character. The judge acknowledged the impact of the traumatic event on Chalcroft’s mental health and opted for an 18-month community order instead of an immediate custodial sentence. Chalcroft was also banned from driving for 18 months and instructed to pass an extended test before driving again, with a warning that any further offenses would lead to immediate imprisonment.
