Loop Lifestyle has noted the significant influence of Brand Jamaica in the work of Kingston-born, New York-based designer Edvin Thompson. Thompson, the founder and creative director of Brooklyn-based fashion label Theophilio, has recently collaborated with Warby Parker in their new sunglasses collection. “These sunglasses are like a memoir for me,” Thompson said, recognizing how his design reflected his past as well as his aspirations for the future. The collaboration was a fusion of his past experiences and his future plans as a designer.
The Warby Parker x Theophilio sunglasses collection is named Shaunie, after Thompson’s nickname in Jamaica. According to Warby Parker, Shaunie embodies nostalgia and at the same time introduces groundbreaking elements. Thompson’s childhood in Jamaica influences the sunglasses’ three-tonal colourways, combining elements from the 70s and 00s with new-age features. Creating a unique fusion, the sunglasses retail for US$145 and are inspired by tropical fruits like soursop, lime, and mango.
A significant role in the collaboration was played by Theophilio’s brand director, Antoine Gregory. Gregory is the founder of the Black Fashion Fair, a platform that unifies media, commerce, and high culture. He was instrumental in connecting the two brands and has previously collaborated with Warby Parker for the 2022 release of his Black Fashion Fair magazine. For Gregory, it’s crucial that Black designers have the same opportunities and resources as their peers.
Gregory expressed delight at Warby Parker’s decision to collaborate with Theophilio, stating, “Warby Parker has been an exciting partner since we launched our inaugural publication with them in 2022. I am happy to have been a part of this journey with Edvin and Warby Parker. I am excited about the work Black Fashion Fair does and continues to set a standard for.” Gregory’s work is paving a path for more Black designers to gain recognition in the fashion industry.
Since its launch in 2016, Theophilio has made a significant impact in the fashion world. They received the 2021 CFDA Fashion Awards American Emerging Designer of the Year, partnered with the inaugural Black Fashion Fair magazine, made waves with a fashion week runway presentation, and have now collaborated with Warby Parker. All of these accomplishments demonstrate Thompson’s commitment to his vision and the growth of his brand.

Do these sunglasses really capture the essence of Jamaican culture? Lets discuss! 🕶🇯🇲
I think its a stretch to say sunglasses can capture the essence of an entire culture. They may be inspired by Jamaican vibes, but lets not oversimplify a rich and diverse culture into a fashion statement. Lets appreciate Jamaican culture for its depth beyond just aesthetics.
Why are they called Jcan-inspired instead of just Jamaican? Seems unnecessary.
Theyre called Jcan-inspired to honor the fusion of Jamaican culture with other influences. Its about celebrating diversity and creativity, not sticking to traditional labels. Embrace the evolution of cultural expression and appreciate the unique blend that sets these designs apart.
Why do we need Jamaican-inspired sunglasses when there are already so many options?
