In today’s video, we’ll discover together one of Japan’s most strange and famous bank robberies. The story took place on January 26, 1948, at the Teikoku Ginko (Imperial Bank) in the Tokyo neighborhood of Shiinamachi.
On the evening of January 26, 1948, a man who said he was a public health official went into the bank. He told the staff that he had been sent by the government to protect them from a recent dysentery outbreak in the area. As part of his plan, the man gave pills and liquid medicine to the employees and told them to take the medicine right away.
The bank staff followed his instructions, trusting the man’s apparent authority. However, the “medicine” turned out to be poison. Within minutes, twelve employees and a bank customer fell dead. The imposter then proceeded to steal 164,000 yen (approximately $500 at the time) from the bank and vanished without a trace.
In the months following the incident, the police conducted a thorough investigation but were unable to identify the culprit. The painter Sadamichi Hirasawa was detained on unrelated forgery charges in August 1948. Throughout their investigation, the police came to the conclusion that Hirasawa was also culpable for the Teigin Incident.
In November 1950, Hirasawa was convicted of the robbery and murders despite a lack of concrete evidence relating him to the crime. His trial was controversial, as the primary evidence against him was his signed confession, which he subsequently recanted, claiming it was coerced under torture.
Hirasawa was sentenced to death, but his execution was never carried out, consistently maintaining his innocence. Hirasawa passed away in 1987 in his prison cell at the age of 95.
