Yogi Adityanath, the current Chief Minister of India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, has been a figure of controversy since his ascension to power in 2017. A firebrand Hindu nationalist known for his hardline stance on law and order, Adityanath has polarized public opinion with his policies and statements. In this article, we will take a closer look at his rise to power, his tenure as Chief Minister, and the controversies surrounding his governance.

Adityanath was born Ajay Singh Bisht in 1972 in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He joined the youth wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) – the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – at a young age and later became a member of the BJP. He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1998 and has been a member of parliament since 1998. He is known for his fiery speeches, and his uncompromising stance on issues such as cow protection, love jihad, and the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Adityanath’s appointment as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2017 came as a surprise to many. His controversial past, which includes charges of inciting communal violence and hate speech, had led some to question his fitness for the job. However, his supporters saw him as a strong and decisive leader who could bring law and order to the state.

Since taking office, Adityanath has launched several initiatives aimed at improving governance and reducing crime in Uttar Pradesh. He has also focused on infrastructure development, with projects such as the construction of a new international airport in Noida and the expansion of the Lucknow Metro.

However, his tenure has been marred by controversy. Critics accuse him of promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda at the expense of religious minorities, particularly Muslims. Adityanath has been accused of stoking communal tensions through his speeches and actions, such as his government’s crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses and his support for cow vigilantism.

Adityanath has also been criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Uttar Pradesh. His government has been accused of underreporting cases and deaths, and of failing to provide adequate medical facilities and supplies. In April 2021, the Allahabad High Court criticized the state government’s handling of the pandemic, calling it “completely unprepared” and “nonchalant to the extent of being callous.”

Despite these controversies, Adityanath remains a popular figure among BJP supporters. His hardline stance on law and order and his emphasis on development have earned him a loyal following. However, his critics argue that his policies are polarizing and that his governance has been divisive.

In conclusion, Yogi Adityanath’s tenure as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has been marked by controversy and polarization. While his supporters view him as a strong and decisive leader, his critics accuse him of promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda at the expense of religious minorities. Whether Adityanath’s legacy will be one of progress or division remains to be seen.
