Yogi Adityanath, the current Chief Minister of India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, has been a figure of controversy since his ascension to power in 2017. A firebrand Hindu nationalist known for his hardline stance on law and order, Adityanath has polarized public opinion with his policies and statements. Adityanath was born Ajay Singh Bisht in 1972 in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He joined the youth wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) – the ideological parent of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – at a young age and later became a member of the BJP. He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1998 and has been a member of parliament since 1998. He is known for his fiery speeches, and his uncompromising stance on issues such as cow protection, love jihad, and the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Adityanath’s appointment as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2017 came as a surprise to many. His controversial past, which includes charges of inciting communal violence and hate speech, had led some to question his fitness for the job. However, his supporters saw him as a strong and decisive leader who could bring law and order to the state.
