Three troubled teenagers, Adrianne Reynolds, Sarah Kolb, and Cory Gregory attended an alternative high school in East Moline, Illinois in 2005. The toxic jealousy between them turned their close friendship fatal, leading to a brutal and sadistic crime that shocked the local community. Adrianne was originally from Longview, Texas, and moved to Illinois to live with her adoptive father and stepmother, Tony and Joann Reynolds. She had a passion for singing but struggled academically, leading her to enroll at Black Hawk College Outreach to obtain her GED.
At the college, Adrianne met Sarah Kolb and Cory Gregory in 2004. Sarah and Cory had a close relationship, but Sarah’s jealousy over Adrianne’s growing friendship with Cory created tension. After a heated argument between Sarah and Adrianne, Sarah had a sinister idea to kill Reynolds, which she expressed in her journal as a joke. On the afternoon of January 21, 2005, while out to lunch, Sarah and Cory attacked Adrianne in the car, leading to her death. They then burned Adrianne’s body at Sarah’s grandparents’ farm in an attempt to dispose of the evidence.
The day after Adrianne’s murder, Sarah and Cory recruited Nathan Gaudet, a fellow student with an obsession with blood and gore, to help dismember Adrianne’s body. Nathan used a hacksaw to sever limbs and a head, while Sarah and Cory disposed of the remains at various locations. Adrianne’s disappearance led to her parents reporting her missing, and an anonymous tip led the authorities to Sarah and Cory, who were later arrested for questioning. Cory eventually confessed to his involvement in the murder and led police to Adrianne’s remains.
Sarah and Cory were charged with two counts of first-degree murder and concealment of a homicide in February 2005. Sarah was found guilty of the charges and sentenced to 53 years in prison, while Cory pleaded guilty and received a 45-year sentence. Nathan Gaudet, who assisted in dismembering Adrianne’s body, received a five-year sentence in a detention center. The motive for the murder was revealed to be Sarah’s jealousy over Adrianne’s growing friendship with Cory, leading to a disturbing and tragic end for all involved.
At the sentencing hearing, Sarah Kolb expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging that she felt no feeling as Adrianne died. Cory Gregory, who was in love with Sarah, assisted in the murder out of his feelings for her. The case of the murder of Adrianne Reynolds highlights the extreme consequences of jealousy and manipulation among young adults, leading to a tragic end for all involved. The community was shocked by the brutal crime, and the convicted individuals are currently serving their sentences in prison.
