Sexting is sending and receiving nude or partially nude photos or videos using electronic devices. The messages travel through text, email, or social media platforms and are used by sex traffickers to coerce a young person, typically ages 8 to 17*, to send more images or to engage in sexual activity for money. Groomers and traffickers often select popular platforms to seek out potential victims, such as online gaming sites like Fortnite and Roblox; interaction networks such as Facebook and WeChat; messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Kik, Facebook Messenger, and Snapchat; photo/video sharing networks like Instagram; content-sharing subscription sites like Only Fans.
Groomers and traffickers often pretend to be the same age as a young person by creating a false identity with fake photos. Young people need to remember that anyone of any age and gender can be a groomer with the intention of sex trafficking victims.
