Dr. Roodal Moonilal, Member of Parliament and Deputy Political Leader of the United National Congress (UNC), announced that the party will be implementing a stricter screening process for potential candidates interested in positions for next year’s general elections. This decision comes in light of reports that Mayaro MP Rushton Paray, who challenged the party to hold internal elections in June, allegedly holds a PNM party card, which came as a surprise to many. Moonilal stated that moving forward, there will be a more rigorous process to prevent individuals from switching between the PNM and UNC.
During a media conference, Paray called for the leadership of the UNC to respect the voice of its members and proceed with internal elections in June. Paray’s demand, supported by MPs Dr. Rai Ragbir and Victor Roberts, has caused controversy within the party, with other MPs like Rodney Charles and Anita Haynes-Alleyne joining his call. Party executives criticized these MPs, accusing them of being “agents of the PNM.” Moonilal expressed concern over Paray’s claim that other MPs were secretly supporting him, calling it reckless and frightening.
Moonilal warned party members to be cautious and not engage in games as the PNM might try to use and manipulate them. He recalled a past incident where the PNM attempted to buy out a UNC officer, only to give them a bounced cheque. He emphasized that the party does not have time for such behavior and urged colleagues to be mindful of their actions. Moonilal also highlighted the need for unity within the UNC and emphasized the importance of maintaining loyalty to the party.
The revelation of Paray’s alleged affiliation with the PNM has raised concerns within the UNC about the credibility and loyalty of potential candidates. Moonilal’s announcement of a stricter screening process aims to prevent individuals with conflicting loyalties from being considered for positions within the party. The issue has sparked a debate within the UNC about the need for internal elections and the importance of respecting the party’s democratic processes.
As the UNC prepares for next year’s general elections, Moonilal’s focus on conducting a thorough screening process reflects the party’s commitment to ensuring the integrity and loyalty of its candidates. The internal debate sparked by Paray’s call for elections highlights the importance of unity and cohesion within the UNC. Moonilal’s warning to party members to avoid being manipulated by outside forces serves as a reminder of the challenges and pressures faced by political parties in maintaining internal solidarity and loyalty among members.

I think its a bit extreme. Let the students have some freedom, geez!
This is just another way to suppress diverse voices on campus.
Actually, promoting diversity on campus means giving voice to marginalized communities who are often silenced. This initiative is a step in the right direction to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all students. Your perspective is shortsighted and lacks empathy.
Is this really necessary? Let the students decide who they want!
The school is responsible for ensuring a fair and unbiased election process. Allowing students to decide is important, but there must be guidelines in place to maintain integrity. Lets trust the schools judgment in setting up a structured and transparent election system.
I think UNC should focus more on student leadership qualities than just screening!
Why should a university dictate election candidates? Let students decide!
Does UNC really need to be so strict? Let the students decide!
Some students need structure to thrive. UNCs rules may help maintain order and academic standards. Letting students decide everything could lead to chaos and compromise the quality of education. Trust the institution to make the tough calls for the benefit of all.
I think candidates should have to solve a Rubiks cube blindfolded. Just saying.
Thats a ridiculous idea. What does solving a Rubiks cube blindfolded have to do with someones qualifications for a job? Lets focus on relevant skills and experience, not party tricks. Keep the selection process practical and fair.
Shouldnt college students focus on studies, not politics? Just a thought.
Is this necessary or just adding unnecessary barriers to student participation? 🤔
Its important to maintain academic integrity and ensure a fair playing field for all students. Setting certain boundaries can actually encourage more meaningful participation and discourage cheating. Lets focus on creating a level playing field for everyone to succeed.
This screening process may limit diverse perspectives. Is it necessary for a fair election?
Having a screening process ensures the integrity of the election. Its about quality over quantity. Diverse perspectives can still be represented through other means. A fair election requires ensuring only qualified candidates participate. Trust the process.
Shouldnt we focus on qualifications rather than screening process for election candidates?
Shouldnt students focus on academics, not politics? UNCs new screening seems excessive.
Do we really want our universities to be like Big Brother?
This new screening process is a step in the right direction! Accountability matters.
I think this screening process might stifle diversity of thought among candidates.
