Using Art as a Tool to Decrease Crime and Violence for At-Risk Youth

The BRIDGE Project in the European Union is utilizing art as a tool to prevent violence amongst at-risk youth aged 15 to 29 years in specific communities. The project, implemented by the Multi-Care Youth Foundation, aims to reduce youth crime and violence by engaging these youngsters in creating messages about the need for change. Through the partnership with Crime Stop Jamaica, the youth participating in the BRIDGE Project have been given the opportunity to undergo training in film production with the creative agency, The LAB. This training allows them to learn technical skills in photography and videography while also empowering them to tell stories about the societal issues they face and the changes they want to see. According to Alicia Glasgow Gentles, the Executive Director of the Multi-Care Youth Foundation, youth are both the main perpetrators and victims of crime in Jamaica, emphasizing the importance of engaging them in efforts to reduce crime and violence.
