The Permanent Representative of Haiti to UNESCO, Dominique Dupuy, who was proposed to the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) to become a member of the Presidential Transition Council, has announced her withdrawal from this entity. In a public video, she thanks the EDE/RED/Historical Compromise platform for considering her for this position and reaffirms her desire to continue serving her country.
Dupuy cites attacks she has faced since her name was proposed for the council by the EDE/RED/Historical Compromise platform as one of the reasons for her departure. The Presidential Transition Council is tasked with leading the transition in Haiti, making Dupuy’s withdrawal a significant event.
Her withdrawal obliges those involved in Haiti’s transition, including CARICOM, to revisit discussions to find a replacement. This challenge adds to ongoing complex debates about who should chair the council and who should have voting rights.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry has previously announced on March 12 that he would step down from his position once the nine-member Presidential Council (seven voting members representing seven political platforms and two observers representing civil society) took office.
The replacement of Dupuy and related discussions underline further complexity to Haiti’s transitional period. It presents a unique set of challenges to discuss such as who will replace her, who should lead the council and who should have voting rights.
