Kim Avis was sentenced to 15 years in jail in 2021 for sex offences, including rape, after subjecting four women to years of abuse. One of his victims, Jade Skea, shared her story of how she was lured to a caravan by Avis, isolated from everything, and subsequently attacked. Avis, who was well known for his charity work in Scotland, met Ms Skea when she was a teenager and eventually isolated her from her family and friends, moving her into a static caravan where he raped her multiple times. Ms Skea reported Avis to the police in 2015, leading to his arrest and subsequent court appearance on multiple rape and sexual assault charges from four women.
After being released on bail, Avis fled to the United States, where he staged his own death at Monastery Beach in California. With the help of an alias, Cameron MacGregor, Avis managed to evade authorities for two years until he was captured by US marshals and police. A woman named Angie recognized Avis as MacGregor and reported him to authorities, eventually leading to his arrest and extradition back to Scotland. Despite being in federal prison in the US, Angie visited Avis and later told him that she was the one who had turned him in to the authorities.
Avis was sentenced to 15 years in jail in the High Court in Edinburgh, where he will serve time for his crimes. Ms Skea, one of Avis’s victims, expressed her belief that he should never be released into the public again, citing the destructive nature of his behavior. The BBC documentary, Disclosure: Dead Man Running, sheds light on the case and showcases the journey of Avis being brought to justice. The documentary features Ms Skea’s account of her abuse by Avis and his subsequent attempt to evade capture in the US. Angie’s role in recognizing Avis and aiding in his arrest is also highlighted in the documentary, providing insight into the events that led to the serial rapist’s apprehension.
The disturbing story of Kim Avis’s abuses and his attempts to escape justice is a chilling reminder of the impact of his actions on his victims. Despite his efforts to fake his own death and disappear, Avis was eventually caught and sentenced to prison for his crimes. Ms Skea and others who were victimized by Avis have bravely shared their stories, shedding light on the trauma and pain caused by his actions. The documentary serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of his victims and the importance of bringing perpetrators of such heinous crimes to justice. Avis’s case highlights the significance of support systems for survivors of abuse and the necessity of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
