‘Baby Reindeer’ Creator Richard Gadd Reveals True Story Behind Hit New Show | This Morning

We’re joined by Richard Gadd, who’s turned his real-life experience of being stalked into a hit TV series ‘Baby Reindeer’. Working behind the bar of a pub, he offered one female punter a free cup of tea after she claimed she couldn’t afford a drink. That single act of kindness set off a series of events which would change his life forever. The woman – ‘Martha’ – went on to send him 40,000 emails and 350 hours of voicemail while obsessively stalking him outside his home, at his workplace and at his comedy gigs. Richard joins us today to explain why he wanted to share his story and how it feels to have created Netflix’s current number-one TV series.

I absolutely loved how Richard wasn't a perfect victim. The story does an amazing job portraying the dynamics between people who are broken in different ways. Watching the show there's multiple moments where the character/he isn't choosing the best approach. It's easy to look at the show and thinking you'd act differently. That's what I'd do TODAY, after my own life altering experience that forced me to have more boundaries and be more protective of my own peace.

My favorite character is Teri; everything she said made so much sense and she actually knows what a boundary is.

This whole show is a big advertisement for therapy and resolving childhood trauma.

  • @mushroombird9400 July 3, 2024

How many movies, biographies and fictional, have been made about women as victims of stalking? Hundreds? Interesting how this movie is the one to be discussed all over media. Hopefully change can come from this.

people say always see the good in things, which can be a bit toxic, but I think it’s better to look for the humor in any situation which it seems like he has done.

  • @Maryhilton-ws6ol July 3, 2024

The story of someone from an abusive childhood and dirt poverty who comes of age with no idea how the world works stricken helpless with clinical depression who can't finish school or get a job and struggles to keep from being homeless and eventually ends up in a situation but with no retirement savings and their spouse dies and instead of being able to go home and grieve they have to go back to an apartment they're about to lose along with all their stuff that is their only remaining connection to their spouse probably isn't fun watching for a netflix audience. "This fall… a man discovers what humans are really like when you have nothing to offer them, when they have no reason to stand next to you… a man who discovers the truth in the story of John the Baptist, the most Holy man on earth who wasn't fit to clean Jesus' feet; that humans think themselves exalted, decent and good but they're really indifferent, weak, mean spirited, shallow, phony brave diarrhea…"
