Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson was left fuming after thieves broke into his auction house in Derbyshire and stole items including silver, watches, and jewelry. Police were called to the Hansons Auctioneers building in Etwall, Derbyshire, at 2.10 am on April 17, after being alerted to the break-in. The four-day auction of watches, silver, and jewelry, which was due to start that day, has now been pushed back to early next week. Speaking of the theft, Charles, 45, who is best known for his appearance on Antiques Road Trip and Flog It!, described the act as “despicable” and “sad.”
Charles added, “It’s despicable and sad that my Etwall saleroom has been broken into, but thankfully, limited mess and disturbance occurred. This was due to our security system and the police who were quickly on the scene.” He reassured vendors affected by the incident that they would be properly compensated through insurance. He also mentioned that the company’s four-day auction had been temporarily delayed due to the unforeseen circumstances and apologized for the delay, aiming to reschedule the auction soon. The police station’s media liaison officer stated that officers were still on the scene, and an ongoing investigation was taking place.
In February, Charles faced legal trouble after being charged with assault and coercive behavior towards his wife Rebecca Ludlam. Denying all seven offenses, Charles entered a not guilty plea at his initial court appearance in front of Judge Shaun Smith KC. The charges included controlling and coercive behavior between 2015 and 2023, assault causing bodily harm in May 2020, and two counts of assault by beating in 2022 and 2023. A provisional trial scheduled for February 10, 2025, is anticipated to last seven to 10 days.
With the unfortunate break-in at his auction house and the legal issues he is facing, Charles Hanson has been through difficult times. Despite these challenges, he remains dedicated to his work and business across Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and the UK. As an expert on various TV shows related to antiques and auctions, Charles is committed to continuing his professional activities despite the setbacks he has encountered recently.
