1. Why GQ’s latest cover is kicking up some controversy.
Fans are raising question about GQ’s cover featuring Serena Williams as their “Woman of the Year.” The cover features Williams alongside the words “Men of the Year.” The word “men” is crossed out and is replaced with “woman” in quotation marks. Critics said the punctuation appears to call into question Williams’ gender or femininity. A GQ research manager tweeted a response, saying it was handwritten by designer Virgil Abloh who styled Williams for the shoot. He says Abloh is known for using quotation marks in her designs.
2. Juul shuts down social media accounts
Popular e-cigarette maker Juul is voluntarily shutting down it’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. The company says they’re cracking down on youth e-cigarette use. They also announced they will stop selling many of its flavored vape pods. This comes just before the Food and Drug Administration is expected to hand down stricter rules around vaping and e-cigarettes.
3. Hate crime rates continue to increase.
Hate crimes increased by about 17% in the U.S. last year. That’s, according the FBI’s annual “Hate Crime Statistics” report. It found the most common reasons victims were targeted were race, religion and sexual orientation. The FBI says the year-over-year increase could be because more law enforcement agencies are reporting hate crime data this year.
4. Groceries by autonomous vehicle
Could robots be helping to deliver groceries right to your door? Ford, Walmart and Postmates are trying to make that a reality with autonomous vehicle research. Wednesday, the automaker announced the creation of a grocery delivery service using vehicles designed to simulate an autonomous experience in Miami. There’s no timeline for when the pilot project will take off, but back backup drivers will still be behind the wheel.
