The numbers associated with human sex trafficking are staggering, but the lives of victims and survivors are what stay with us. In this talk, Kanani Titchen M.D. reveals her experiences as a physician whose interactions with trafficked patients opened her eyes to a parallel world previously unseen.

Kanani Titchen MD, is an Adolescent Medicine fellow at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Bronx, New York. She encountered human sex trafficking for the first time during a gynecologic rotation while in medical school at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Kanani served as the 2013-2014 President of the American Medical Women’s Association National Resident Division. During her tenure as President, she trained with Girls’ Educational & Mentoring Services in New York City and created an online video tutorial to educate doctors about human sex trafficking.

She has authored numerous articles for medical journals and for the lay press about US child sex trafficking and physician education, and she has advocated for sex trafficking survivors at the United Nations and at the US Department of Health and Human Services.

    The number one red flag is attempting to separate you physically or emotionally from others. Most people fall for this. We are too quick to blame others for our problems and self-isolate

    Exactly, I been seeing teenagers who going school and doing prostitution. Entire house members are pimping them like a family.

    I'm staying at an extended stay motel. There are a multitude of children ranging from 2 to 10 ish showing up, then gone. Should I call someone?

    If someone is traveling by themselves or with a canine they are almost certainly “Not Human Trafficking”.

    Education is vital if "human trafficking" is going to be eliminated from our societies, very insightful video and informative content!
    But I would delve even further than Dr. Titchen as to why there are so many teenage "runaways" in our societies? What motivated them to go live on the streets, rather than remaining with the parents with 3 square meals a day and a comfortable lifestyle compared with living on the streets? What was it that led to them making this drastic decision, were they merely seeking attention they weren't receiving at home? Did they think it would be kinda cool? What was it?

    TED, why have you automated your comment thread here to keep victims of abused silenced and isolated for more abuse? Why wont you let us actually speak up about our lives while you put your vetted speaker up on stage for others to listen to? One of the biggest fronts of all is the mental health crisis center and state hospital. As a victim of abuse, authorities in those facilities abused me worse than my childhood abusers had done, all under the guise of providing legal and medical care, abuse on going for years, not sure why it has stopped. There's no representation to stop them. Why is this not spoken of at all in the video?

    There is a business In my local neighborhood that has been shut down since 2014 and the location still remains standing and has power. Up until recently this athletics club has been getting activity by two vehicles only at night and the other night I was going for a run and heard a girl screaming bloody murder from this building. This building has a code 9999 activities of extraterritorial organizations and bodies. The police have done nothing and say a detective is on a case but this is life and death we’re talking about ? They made the vehicle leave tonight but I have the worst feeling about this place. If you’re not local you wouldn’t know this place exists. It’s hidden and the athletics club goes underground. It has a pool, full racketball area and full gym access all underneath businesses that reside above the location. I have the urge to investigate and go inside. The police won’t do anything but I’m hearing girls scream from this location. And I live right down the street. I need SOMEONE TO GET AHOLD OF ME

    I wish there were a more affordable course for this type of thing. I checked on the GEMS website and its more then $400. I work with children with low income families, it would be interesting to do this training

    the girl who said she wanted her mom broke my heart. i'm 31 years old next month and when i'm having a rough night, sometimes i want my mom too. i can't imagine what it must be like to feel so trapped and frightened when you're that young. she was in the ER for a reason. pimps don't just let you come in for a bad headache.

    What questions can you ask? How then can you offer safety, ie. trying to separate them from their pimp, as one might be lurking around or somewhere close by, outside or in a car waiting etc etc?

    For a trafficked girl to still go to school was a revelation!! Does anyone know how their pimp is able to EXERT such CONTROL? Knowingay help ask the right questions.

    My toddler daughter was being carried out of a gated park in a very upscale neighborhood by a very stylish woman as her grandmother read the newspaper near by. Thank God she looked up in time and ran to and confronted the woman who relinquished my daughter. My mother in law was so freaked out by the near tragedy that she did not tell us about it for 20 years. I am so grateful for my happy ending and distraught to know this is REAL.

    There is something seriously lacking in the socialization of males, the customers, that supports this industry. The commoditization of children and women, the desensitization of society to crime. Until there’s a integrated campaign of educators, health care providers, law enforcement, courts, and ISPs, it will thrive. There are no lost children; people lose them. And we are those people.

    Far too many tricks to this awful trade! My daughter almost got snagged by almost taking an OVERPAID dog sitting/walking job. I FELT wrong about this from the start. It was a trap. She was told to go to this empty apartment where the two dogs would be and "their friend" who brought the dog food would let her in. The contact was made from them finding her on a website for babysitters and dog sitters. He claimed to work for the UN in PREVENTION of human trafficking (such a nice man IMAGE), but I know it was the OPPOSITE. He was a trafficker.

    So often illegal drugs are used to control people and keep them from leaving bad situations. 1. Because maybe they need to get the next fix and 2. Because their abuser can threaten them with jail/prison (where there are also drugs btw and the problems perpetuate). This gives the abuser so much power over then.. Decriminalizing drug use would be such a big step toward freedom for many people. We can still prosecute for driving intoxicated (no matter what the intoxicant is) or any action that hurts other people. But decriminalizing USE would set some people free I think.

    Capital punishment must be applied to human traffickers and paedaphiles. We need to push this penalty globally. The UN and UNICEF don't take part on solving the problem. They only takk about it, as always.
