IDENTITY THEFT: Credit Freeze vs Credit Monitoring (BEST FREE Protection?)

Congress recently passed a bill that will make credit freezes absolutely free, so Matthew Pillmore of VIP Financial Education shares his perspective and advice on whether a credit freeze makes sense – even if it’s free. Ever since the Equifax hack last year, the subject of identity theft has been on the edge of minds all across the country. Questions like “What should I do to protect myself from my identity being stolen? Should I get a security freeze or a credit freeze? Should I access credit monitoring with fraud alert notifications from a place like Credit Karma?”

Well, this question is getting even more necessary to think about since credit freezes won’t cost anything once the passed bill is implemented. It’s critical to think about how your good credit worthiness and fico credit score will be effected. If your short term financial goals include accessing new Debt Weapons then a credit freeze may not be the best option and something like Lifelock or ID Shield may make sense. At a bare minimum, everyone should be monitoring their credit, which can be done for free from places like Credit Karma. Credit Karma gives you some excellent protection through credit card fraud detection at the major credit bureaus Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Just be sure to find the solution that makes sense for your financial goals so you can make those goals happen and achieve your financial freedom faster and more effectively, while remaining safe and protected from identity fraud, cuz credit card fraud is not an enjoyable experience.

Don't forget – every parent should freeze the credit reports of their children with all three bureaus. Check out https://creditparent.com for an easy way to get the credit freeze done for a child. It's much harder to do for a child than for yourself and Credit Parent makes it real easy.

Before your channel I used to be scared of viewing my credit scores and wasn't sure how CreditKarma impacted my credit. Thanks to you I'm now obsessed with checking my score and so so at least 3x per week (too much?) lol. I love seeing my scores go up, up, up thanks to this channel!

i just buy Myfico subscription for a monthly update on my scores and reports.. they also monitor my info against dark web forums and such. i am always protecting my info. Protection your info should be your first priority.. then monitor. Good stuff.

I have fallen victim to this in the past, and let me say, it is not fun to go through. Identity theft is a very time consuming ordeal, and can take years to fix…..and create a lot of unnecessary stress. We have identity shield and use a protection firm through my work, and let me say it is like a breath of fresh air to know every time anything hits my report I get atleast 4 different notifications. I don’t know of many instances where anyone does not need some sort of monitoring or protection.

As always, great content from the financial experts of VIP.

Good to know freezing credit will be free. It seems a bit backwards to charge for it in the first place…

  • @MrDacubs June 20, 2024

I use a combination of BOA, Wells Fargo, Discover, Credit Karma, creditcards.com, mint.com, Chase credit journey, and experian to monitor my credit and scores. Everyone wants to give you a free credit score but is it relevant and valuable? Checking these various sites allows me to understand the difference between a FICO 8, FICO 9, Vantage3.0, and the one that really matters to me is the FICO 2. I'm glad to hear that credit freezes are now free considering the companies giving the score are the ones that are causing the us to consider the freeze in the first place. lol Informative video as always. Nice job!

I started using credit karma after finding your channel. Ever since I started using it all I’ve seen is my credit go up but it also allows me to keep an eye on the inquires that have gone through.

  • Hi Matt, how often should I monitor my credit? monthly? annually? thanks

  • @paulaaugustine June 20, 2024

Glad to hear Credit Karma is a good option to view credit! I have been using them for quite a while, but was concerned about the safety of the company.

  • @ernestyoung390 June 20, 2024

I have one more question. I have kids and some years ago our car was stolen from our home with all of the kids and our personal information in the car. Can my wife and I look and see if there anything on their credit?

  • @felixrivera9298 June 20, 2024

Are you saying that if you do not have a Credit Freeze, credit solicitations offer will come to you. With a credit Freeze, you will not get credit card offers.

  • @ernestyoung390 June 20, 2024

I am looking to raise my credit score. Are there books you recommend that I need to read and study?

  • @rdemartelaere June 20, 2024

I also use the Experian app. It's free as well.

  • @squatch8576 June 20, 2024
