Professor at Harvard Law School for 50 Years
Well, it’s been another fascinating week in American politics with former President Donald Trump once again stealing the headlines as the circus came to the Big Apple and media coverage of his controversial indictment went into overdrive. It’s the usual chaos, and as the saying goes, there are two sides to every story and the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
This is why I’m delighted to welcome today’s guest back to the show, as no man understands the nuances of Trump’s indictment and has more experience of the political toing and froing that is currently polarising an entire nation.
Alan Dershowitz is a famed lawyer, author and political commentator who has spent a career as one of these most sought-after legal brains, looking after the good, the bad and the ugly among a who’s who of iconic, often polarising and notably controversial client list that has included OJ Simpson, Jeffrey Epstein, Mike Tyson, Julian Assange and of course Donald Trump.
In fact, Alan’s reputation and determination to see all citizens from any walk of life given access to counsel and due process has seen him referred to as one of the “most distinguished defenders of individual rights” and “the top lawyer of last resort.”
Alongside this, Alan also spent just shy of 50 years teaching at the faculty of Harvard Law School, at one time becoming the youngest law professor to be granted tenure in Harvard University’s history.
However, it was in the late 1960s that Alan’s direction became clear as he began representing students threatened with expulsion for protesting the Vietnam War, and he soon thereafter joined the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
He started taking on more high-profile cases and in 1976, successfully appealed the conviction of actor Harry Reems on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute pornography across state lines, as one of the leading performers in the infamous adult film, Deep Throat.
