Mayor Alan Webber and Santa Fe’s Controversial Monuments | In Touch

June 26, 2020 – Protests against racism and debates over monuments have captivated Santa Fe, both in past decades and today. The focal point of the debate today is a Civil War-era obelisk that once referred to Native Americans as “savage.” Vandals defaced it and in the same week, the city removed a statue of Don Diego de Vargas from Cathedral Park. Gwyneth Doland talks with Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber about his approach to the conflicts and the path forward.

**Update: After we taped this interview, Mayor Webber announced plans to build a temporary box around the Santa Fe Plaza Obelisk and use it as a community art installation.

The elected officials not governing our city is creating chaos for the people visiting and people living in Santa Fe. The loud cars that take over our city day and night is an embarrassment to this city and the tax payers. I moved to Santa Fe over 14 years ago and love it, but the last few years of increased noise from the modified car mufflers have taken over the sound scape and is causing noise pollution that's unacceptable most cities. My family and friends will no longer visit due to lack of sleep either in hotel rooms or at my place due to the noise. There are laws in place to curb the illegal cars but it's not being enforced. This is unfair and I don't know to approach it. I have contacted the governor's office and never received a reply, same with the mayor. Do our elected officials ever step outside to see what's going on in this city? This has been going on for a long time and there's been more than ample time to fix this.

this mayor is a weak man

  • Why did this guy let the vandals go! They did not pursue prosecution? Is the museum owner a donor to the Democrat party?

Mayor Webber, yes give into activists that are not from here nor do they know the history of the northern Pueblo Indian or the northern Spanish heritage. Who's truth and reconciliation. Knocking down historical statutes is erasing history no matter how you twist it. " We chose to make things better" really, who is we… Three Sisters, who are they… shared community, it has always been shared, no problems. Until Left Wing cancel culture Wokes started running the show.. You can wag your tongue all you want, but I tell you, the new white guy in town is far different from the gringo of decades ago. They did not come to destroy, they came to be part of the community.
