Neil Oliver: There is a pervasive atmosphere in Scotland of people being frightened into silence

Historian Neil Oliver has joined criticism of the Scottish government’s proposed Hate Crime Bill over its feared impact on freedom of speech.

Speaking with talkRADIO’s Mike Graham, the broadcaster said: “Up here there is a pervasive atmosphere of people being frightened into silence.

“You can argue until you’re blue in the face about whether that is the intention or not of the proposed legislation but it is undeniable that that is the way in which it is being received here in many quarters.”

If passed, the legislation would update the list of characteristics, such as race, sexuality and age, protected under hate crimes and provide for new “stirring up” of hatred offences that would apply to all characteristics.

Mask are for people who believe the Loch Ness Monster is Real.

  • @mogznwaz June 26, 2024

Surely even SNP voters are not on board with this Bill?

  • @davidbaloney2505 June 26, 2024

What weak, spineless, pathetic leaders we have somehow put into power …..frightening.

  • @johnconlon4020 June 26, 2024

If you must offended someone then it would be more advantageous if they didn't have the ability to complain in my opinion.

  • @paulcastle1718 June 26, 2024

Wee Jimmy Cranky wants /needs to shut people up , paranoid about any kind of criticism . So then , I'm not allowed to hate anything ? And I bet you a pound that it's mostly the Marxist socialist like Wee Jimmy that we are forbidden from criticising or contradicting just like the Soviet Union where I gather she got the idea from .

Well, it is more than a year later and masks are still required to go into businesses. Little children in school are required to wear masks, and are. now so used to wearing them that they don't even take them off when their parents tell them they could. I saw that happen at our Pumpkin Patch this year. 100 acres 1/2 mile from the bay and children wanted to keep their masks on . I didn't talk to them so I don't know why they wanted to , but it was upsetting to see. Why ….masks….they aren't affective…they hide people's faces…and our citizens who are deaf and lip readers are really at a disadvantage. So I think wearing masks is also a political statement. With that personal observation aside I so admire Neil Oliver. I am from California, USA and we could use more voices such as his here. However, his point of view and his expression of it is something that I can incorporate into my own language. Namaste'

    I can’t stand the SNP.

  • @justlookin5048 June 26, 2024

You are not Scottish Neil you are Scot. The term Scottish, only came into use when Victoria visited Edinburgh in the 1800 and something. We are Scots, Scottish is a slur which the whole nation bought into. Nobody knew what tartans were after the ethnic cleansing and the 100 year tartan ban. They had us all wearing skirts for her, because we all forgot how to fold the fillie mhor. Someone must have said do you think the skirt is Scots, aye said the other, well …ish. So the slur Scot…ish was born. The previous slur was scotch. Long live the true Scots

  • @annettajensen6751 June 26, 2024

Come to Australia and you'll see it ten fold !!!

  • @neiljohnstone6282 June 26, 2024

Once again Neil you speak for the majority of the Scottish people. The snp don't speak for the majority.

  • @johngrear6506 June 26, 2024

Remember The Simpsons episode where the dolphins take over and the family is bobbing around in the ocean and Homer simply says "The dolphins just wanted it more". Well the dolphins are the SNP and you're (ALL the people opposed to tyranny) going to need to FIGHT, not just comply with tyranny and speak out with incredulity. It's happening and it's happening fast and NOW.

Scotch Whisky Auctions in Glasgow, Scotland, fires staff on grounds of "racial abuse"- without due process – for quoting jokes from the popular American TV Sitcom, "The Big Bang Theory". It is an absolute disgrace that companies can virtue signal and persecute, whilst shamelessly disregarding Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights in this country.

  • @alexspareone3872 June 26, 2024

I feel silly doing it but I wear a mask in the street as it keeps my face warm. It stops me getting the horrible frozen nose and lips syndrome. In fact, somewhere I have a 3M Arctic mask which covers the whole face and would would be useful if I had it available.

  • @anonnemo2504 June 26, 2024

Wise words from Mr. Oliver. This man is a real sage, so more of him, please!

The new concept of presumption of guilt in the legal sphere is a really sinister development. Hopefully, for the people of Scotland, the mask of the SNP has now slipped sufficiently for them to see them for what they truly are.

  • @ericbrown5589 June 26, 2024

If this bill is enacted then the first person arrested should be Humza after his ‘white’ rant. If this bill can permeate into the home then Holyrood cannot be exempt.

  • @David88986 June 26, 2024

They passed it to show their pathological hatred of freedom in Scotland – while leading everyone by the nose for 'independence' – the irony being there will be no personal liberty and independence left in Scotland. It's a sleight of hand and I hope people like myself wake up.

  • @grahamdickson3633 June 26, 2024

Failed archaeologist that hasn't even got a history diploma has something to say about politics.
The union is dying because of Westminsters rotten politics and not because of the SNP.
Should've paid your round lets say.

  • @valansley June 26, 2024

Thank you for discussing this = Decency should be sufficient = Now we are in DANGEROUS waters

  • @affleck80 June 26, 2024

Neil, I totally agree with you, and I am one of the very many for whom Sturgeon does not speak. How arrogant can a person be to claim that they speak on behalf of everyone in Scotland!.

  • @stuartmcmillan6679 June 26, 2024

  • @Mulberry2000 June 26, 2024

I am on the left and it is very worrying what the SNP are doing. I am sorry Niel has to go through this, but I have heard this before. Scary stuff.

  • @lewistaylor2858 June 26, 2024

6:45 what on earth is he going on about? Scotland has always had its own legal system and made its own laws…

  • @tombartram7384 June 26, 2024

    Vote woke get woke.

  • @margaretsmith2351 June 26, 2024

I love history and have often watched his programmes, but never thought much about Neil Oliver the man himself. Always just assuming (my bad) that he was a typical BBC bod. But listening to these conversations it's very clear that whatever his politics may be, he is just a normal, sensible, open-minded critical thinker. And a very nice man to boot. Makes you wonder how he ever got a job at the beeb in the first place.
Either way I'm gaining more and more respect for the man with every interview so long may these conversations continue.

  • @gavinthompson687 June 26, 2024

Neil Oliver is an empire loyalists and not to be taken seriously in Scotland.
When is he going to get a hair cut?!

  • @fckem1000 June 26, 2024

Neil really is the voice of common sense.

  • @leedonnelly6217 June 26, 2024

I've taken to wearing an armband emblazoned with the word 'SCEPTIC'.
We all need to wear a visual badge to identify ourselves to one another (there are hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of us who have no voice), and to show that we do not consent to this garbage.

  • @davidhoy3206 June 26, 2024

Mandela said Resentment is like drinking poison while thinking it will kill your enemies
the Resentment that manifests itself in the Snp IS poisoning Scotland!.

  • @davidhoy3206 June 26, 2024

Oliver is the Welcome face of Scotland where as Sturgeon IS the UGLY face of Scotland.

  • @rogerbenfield885 June 26, 2024

The HATE CRIMES BILL in Scotland is an SNP BILL , and its designed to stop people saying what they think. If you think its not let them vote it in and you will find out.

  • @gtaveditorvids6776 June 26, 2024

Sturgeon needs to be at the bottom of the sea with all the other sturgeons. I don't like that sour faced cow.
